영하 40도에 이르는 혹한! 방금 내쉰 따뜻한 입김도 얼어붙는 땅 시베리아. 아시아 면적의 1/4을 차지하는 광활한 대륙 시베리아는 일 년 중 일곱 달이 겨울이다. 모든 것이 눈으로 뒤덮인 12월, 혹독한 추위의 발원지 시베리아의 겨울은 과연 어떨까. 오늘도 겨울을 살고 내일도 겨울을 사는 이들의 가장 차갑기에 가장 뜨거운 삶 속으로 W와 함께 떠나보자!
얼어붙은 바이칼에서도 인생은 흐른다
카메라까지 얼어붙게 한 극한의 날씨, “괜찮아요. 따뜻한데요.”
뼈 속까지 시린 바람이 몰아치는 거대한 바이칼에서의 고기잡이는 어떠할까. 어부들을 따라나선 취재진은 알혼섬에 도착했다. 알혼은 바이칼의 26개 섬 중 가장 큰 섬으로 유일하게 사람이 사는 섬이다. 쉴 새 없이 몰아치는 날카로운 바람! 바이칼에서의 어획은 그물을 끌어올리는 일조차 만만치 않다. 그물을 올리는 짧은 순간에도 얼음이 얼기 때문! 취재진의 눈을 의심케 하는 일은 고기잡이 내내 이어졌다. 그물에서 빼내기 무섭게 얼어 냉동어가 돼버리는 물고기들! 살인적인 추위에 얼어붙는 것은 물고기만이 아니었다. “배터리로 테이프 4~5권 촬영이 가능한데 기온이 너무 낮아 한 권도 못 찍고 배터리가 방전되고 있습니다.” 취재진의 촬영장비까지 마비시킨 극한의 날씨! 하지만 어부들은 태연하다. “괜찮아요. 따뜻해요.” 점심식사 중 갑자기 내리는 눈! 어부들은 분주하게 움직였다. 기상이 악화되면 호수 한 가운데서 조난당할 수도 있기 때문이다. 예측불허의 날씨, 늘 조난의 위험이 도사리는 바이칼. 하지만 시베리아 어부들은 바이칼의 살인적인 냉기도 데울 만큼 열정적이었다.
영하 40도를 살아가는 뜨거운 사람들
시베리아 벌판 깊숙이 위치한 구하나 마을을 찾은 W. 모든 것이 얼어붙은 듯한 마을은 취재진의 발걸음까지 얼어붙게 했다. 서슬 퍼런 냉기만 가득한 마을, 정말 이곳에 사람이 사는 것일까. 영하 40도의 아침, 마을 여기저기서 총을 멘 남자들이 모이기 시작했다. 그냥 맞기에도 시린 바람을 말을 타고 헤쳐 가는 남자들은 바로 사냥꾼들! W도 그들의 사슴사냥에 동행했다. 50도의 독한 보드카로 살 에는 추위를 견디던 남자들이 갑자기 분주히 움직이기 시작했다. 이윽고 들려오는 총성! 사슴 사냥에 성공한 것일까? 살벌한 냉기에 적막하기까지 한 시베리아 숲이 사냥꾼들의 기개 넘치는 총소리에 활기를 되찾고 있었다.
모든 것을 얼게 하는 혹한의 시베리아. 공기마저 얼 것 같은 차가운 대륙에서도 사람들은 살고 있었다. 세상 가장 시린 겨울에서 가장 뜨거운 삶을 사는 사람들
