Reindeer Nomad Finnish Sami story
A mysterious land where a purple aurora embellishes the night sky and a reindeer plows snowfields of pure white! W met the Sami people, the descendants of Santa Claus, to find Lapland, the northernmost tip of the Scandinavian peninsula and the starting point of the Arctic Circle!
Find the Lapland native, the Sami!
Lapland, located on the Arctic Circle, which is more than 66 degrees north latitude, refers to the northern part of Scandinavia, bordered by Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. The city of Rovaniemi, also in the northern part of Finland, belongs to Lapland. Rovaniemi, about 700 km from the capital Helsinki, falls below minus 20 degrees in winter. However, in spite of the cold weather, more than a million people visit the land of snow and ice every year. That's why Santa Claus! In 1927, after a Finnish radio station said that Santa would live here, Rovaniemi was gradually transformed into a world-famous Santa town.
It is the Lapland Aboriginal Sami who could bring more imaginative wings to the hometown of Rovaniemi! In the traditional lifestyle of the Sami who carry the reindeer in a colorful traditional costume, people naturally reminded me of Santa Claus in a fairy tale. But the people who met W in Santa Village say they are not Sami, but who is the real Sami who keep their culture and identity, not as a tourist product?
The Sami who lead the reindeer in the land of pure white
Seventy years away from Rovaniemi. In the cold land of the Arctic Circle, there are about 250 Sami people living in the traditional lifestyle. In the extreme cold, where the W reporters are hard to bear, the Sami have learned to survive for over 2500 years. Currently, there are over 70,000 Sami people living throughout Lapland. However, the Sami who have been living nomadic life with reindeer regardless of their borders have been recognized as Sami rather than Norwegians, Swedes, and Finns. For thousands of years, while still nomadic, the Sami have maintained their own language, song and lifestyle.
One of the secrets to keeping their tradition for a long time is the reindeer! For the Sami, reindeer is a precious animal considered as the property list # 1. "The reindeer itself is like my life. "There are fifty - five Risto who grew reindeer since he was six years old," he said, adding that he can not think of the reindeer and the Sami as separate. Thus, the Sami are not only getting all of their lives from the reindeer, but also reindeer is a great asset when deciding a career or preparing for old age. There are currently about 250,000 reindeer grazing in Lapland. In the mossy tundra zone, the reindeer is unleashed and grafted together, but even the reindeer living in the wild have their respective owners. Of the numerous reindeer, how do the Sami recognize their reindeer? "I can tell by the ears." The Sami cut off some of the reindeer ears and told them that they left markers that only the owner could recognize.
Twenty years ago, the Finnish government 's assimilation policy forced the Sami to lose their own language and culture, but now they are carrying out traditional conservation movements centered on schools. Although they are small schools with only 8 full-time students, they are trying to keep their roots free. Winter in Lapland and the story of the Sami
