수천 년 동안 메소포타미아를 중심으로 한 곳에서만 살아왔지만 단 한 번도 독립된 나라를 이뤄본 적 없는 쿠르드 사람들! 제 1차 세계대전 후 그들의 터전은 순식간에 찢겨져 터키, 이라크, 이란 등의 영토로 편입됐고 약 3천만 쿠르드 사람들은 세계 최대의 이산 민족으로 살게 됐다. 그중에서도 가장 많은 천 6백만 이상의 쿠르드인들이 살고 있는 곳은 터키. 그러나 터키 정부는 ‘산악 터키인’이라는 신조어까지 만들어낼 정도로 쿠르드족의 존재 자체를 부정하며 언어는 물론 문화까지 금지해왔다. 쿠르드인이라는 이유만으로 끝없는 차별과 이유 없는 죽음을 감당해야 하는 한 맺힌 삶, 그 눈물과 절규를 W에서 취재했다.
성난 쿠르드인들의 시위 - 우리의 목소리를 들어주세요
벌써 한 달째, 터키 전역에서 연일 쿠르드 사람들의 시위가 일어나고 있다. 지난 달 11일, 터키 헌법 재판소가 쿠르드 반군 연루 혐의로 의회 유일의 친 쿠르드 정당에 대해 해산 결정을 내렸기 때문이다. 정당 해산은 극히 제한적으로 취해져야 하는 예외적 조치인 만큼, 민주주의의 기본인 참정권을 훼손한 행위라며 반발하고 나선 쿠르드 시위대. 경찰과 시위대간의 숨 막히는 대치가 계속되는 가운데, W 제작진은 단지 쿠르드 신문을 소지했다는 이유만으로 불심검문까지 당했다.
탄압의 끝은 어디인가
쿠르드인들이 자유를 외치며 독립 운동을 해온 지, 약 30년. 그동안 4만 명이 넘는 쿠르드인이 희생됐고 무려 4천여 개의 전통마을이 불에 탔다. 그로 인해 고향을 떠난 쿠르드인들은 도시의 빈민으로 전락했고, 갈 곳 없는 이들은 다시 마을로 돌아왔다. 총알 자국이 선명하고 군데군데 무너져 내린 집에서, 가축을 기르고 농사를 지으며 쿠르드 사람들은 질긴 삶을 이어가고 있다.
최근 유럽연합이 터키에게 가입요건으로 쿠르드 민주화를 요구하면서, 쿠르드에 대한 억압은 교묘해지고 있다. 쿠르드어 사용을 일부 허용했지만 학교를 비롯한 공공기관에서는 여전히 사용할 수 없고, 심지어 병원에서 쿠르드어를 사용할 경우 치료 거부를 당하는 일까지 발생하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 터키 정부는 세계에서 가장 오래된 석조다리, 하산케이프가 포함된 지역에 대형 다목적 댐 ‘일리수 댐’을 건설하고 있다. 이곳은 쿠르드인들의 거주지로, 댐 건설을 빙자해 쿠르드족을 몰아내려는 의도가 숨어있다는 분석이 나오고 있다.
나라 없는 민족, 쿠르드인의 설움
아직까지 터키에서는 단지 쿠르드인이라는 이유 하나 만으로 이유 없는 죽음을 당하는 일이 비일비재하다. 지난 해 9월, 양을 돌보던 12살 소녀 제일란이 인근 군부대에서 쏜 폭탄에 맞아 숨을 거두는 사건이 발생했다. 군부대 관계자는 사과를 하기는커녕, 오히려 제일란이 실수로 지뢰를 밟은 것이라며 잘못을 전가시키고 있는 상황. 딸이 세상을 떠난 후, 하루도 빠짐없이 사고 현장에 나온다는 제일란의 어머니는 “우리가 만약 터키 국민이었더라도 이렇게 하겠냐”며 울부짖었다.
주변국의 역학관계에 의해 철저히 이용되고 농락당해 온 쿠르드족의 비극적인 운명. 그렇다면 진정 쿠르드 사람들이 바라는 것은 뭘까? 쿠르드 문제를 해결할 수 있는 방법은 없을까? 그들의 땅, 쿠르디스탄에 봄이 오는 그 날은 과연 언제일까?

Spring comes to the Kurdish Kurdistan story
Kurdish people who have lived only in Mesopotamia for thousands of years but have never done so in an independent country! After the First World War, their land was quickly torn into the territories of Turkey, Iraq and Iran, and about 30 million Kurds lived as the world's largest disjuncts. On November 11, the Turkish Constitutional Court decided to dissolve the only Kurdish party in parliament on suspicion of involvement in the Kurdish rebels. It is an exceptional measure that should be taken only to an extremely limited extent, and the Kurdish protesters rebelled against it saying it was an act that undermined the suffrage that is the basis of democracy. As the breathless confrontation between the police and the demonstrators continued, W crew members were questioned only because they had a Kurd newspaper.
Where is the end of repression?
It has been about 30 years since the Kurds shouted for freedom and made an independent movement. More than 40,000 Kurds have been killed and more than 4,000 traditional villages have been burned. As a result, the Kurds who left their homes fell into the city's poor, and those who had no place to go returned to their villages. In the house where the bullet marks are clear and the place collapsed, the Kurds are living a hard life by raising livestock and farming.
The recent oppression of the Kurd is becoming tricky as the European Union has demanded democratization of the Kurdistan with the requirement to join Turkey. Some allow Kurdish use, but they are still unavailable in schools and public institutions, and even when Kurdish is used in hospitals, they are denied treatment. In addition, the Turkish government is building a large-scale multi-purpose dam "Ilisu Dam" in the area that includes the oldest stone bridge in the world, Hassanpeck. This is the residence of the Kurdish people, and there is an analysis that the intention is to hide Kurdish people from building the dam.
Nationless nation, Kurdish people
In Turkey, there is no reason to die for no reason at all, just because it is a Kurd. In September last year, a 12-year-old girl, Jilan, who was caring for a sheep, was killed by a bomb on a nearby military base. A military official said, "Instead of apologizing, Jeilan mistakenly said he had landed a mine accidentally. After her daughter left the world, her mother came out to the scene of the accident. She said, "If we were a Turkish citizen, would we do this?"
The tragic destiny of the Kurds, who have been thoroughly used and abused by the dynamics of neighboring countries. So what does the Kurdish people really want? Is there any way to solve the Kurdish problem? When will the spring come to their land, Kurdistan?
