중국에서 두 번째로 험한 산으로 꼽히는 ‘대량산’. 중국 사천성에는 2천 미터가 넘는 이 산을 매일같이 오르는 아이들이 있다. 허름한 사다리 하나에 몸을 의지한 채 90도로 깎아지른 절벽을 오르내리는 아이들! 그 위험천만한 길 위에는, 조그마한 학교가 아이들을 기다리고 있다. 세상에서 가장 멀고 험한 그 길에, <W>가 동행했다.
세상에서 가장 험난한 등굣길
중국 사천성의 이족(彛族)마을은 전기는 물론 변변한 수도시설조차 없는 산간 오지 마을이다. 일명 ‘낭떠러지 학교’로 불리는 이곳의 ‘이평촌 초등학교’는 이 지역 이족 아이들이 다닐 수 있는 유일한 학교. 70여 명의 전교생 중 집이 학교 아래인 아이들 16명은, 매일 위험천만한 사다리에 매달려 아찔한 절벽을 오르내린다. 왕복 4시간이 넘는 멀고 험한 이 길도, 공부에 대한 아이들의 열의를 꺾지 못하기 때문이다.
문맹촌을 문화촌으로 바꾼 부부
“선생님이 오기 전에는 돈조차 제대로 못 세는 사람들이 수두룩했어요.” 문명과 동떨어져 옷조차 챙겨 입지 않고 생활하는 이족 사람들을 보고, 19년 전 이곳 산간 초등학교를 찾아온 리구이린 부부. 이들은 절벽을 오르는 아이들 한 명 한 명의 손을 잡아 끌어주고, 어린 아이들은 직접 업어서 험난한 등하교를 함께한다. “교육만이 빈곤을 벗어날 유일한 희망입니다. 저를 대신해 이곳 아이들을 가르칠 사람이 없다면, 저는 죽는 날까지 이 학교를 떠나지 않을 겁니다.” 리구이린 선생님(42)이 가장 공을 들이는 수업은 표준어. 이족어를 사용하는 이곳 사람들에게 있어, 사회생활의 가장 큰 장애물은 바로 언어이기 때문이다. 덕분에 평생 산에서만 살아가던 이족 아이들에게 더 큰 꿈이 생겼다. 올해 10살인 암부하의 장래희망은 ‘리구이린 선생님같은 교육자’라고 했다.
