문경새재 도립공원

백두대간의 조령산 마루를 넘는 이 재는 예로부터 한강과 낙동강유역을 잇는 영남대로상의 가장 높고 험한 고개로 사회 문화 경제의 유통과 국방상의 요충지였다. 새재는 「새도 날아서 넘기 힘든 고개」, 옛 문헌에 초점이라고도 하여 「풀(억새)이 우거진 고개」 또는 하늘재와 이우리재사이의 「새(사이)재」, 새(新)로 된 고개의 「새(新)재」 등의 뜻이라고도 한다. 임진왜란 뒤에 이곳에 3개(주흘관, 조곡관, 조령관)의 관문을 설치하여 국방의 요새로 삼았다. 이 곳은 자연경관이 빼어나고 유서 깊은 유적과 설화·민요 등으로 이름 높은 곳이다. 문경새재 제1관문에서 제3관문까지 6.5km 중심으로 트레킹코스로 만들어 놓았고, 약 5-6시간이 소요된다. 트레킹 코스 중에는 옛길이 재현되어 있는 구간이 있어 흙길을 맨발로 걸어볼 수도 있다.
▷ 꽃밭서덜
제2관문에서 조곡계곡을 따라 약 4km 올라가면 산허리를 돌무더기와 긴 돌로 세워 놓고 그 위에 작고 넓적한 돌을 얹어 마치 장승처럼 세운 곳이 나오는데 이곳이 꽃밭서덜이다. 오가는 사람들이 소원성취를 위하여 이렇게 한 것으로 생각되는데, 아들을 못 낳는 여인이 여기 와서 빌면 아들을 낳을 수 있다는 이야기가 구전으로 내려오고 있다.
