멕시코를 뒤덮은 죽음숭배, 산타 무에르떼
정통 카톨릭교가 지배하는 멕시코. 이곳에 요즘 이상한 기도소리가 울려퍼지고 있다. 거리 곳곳에 기괴한 형상을 한 물건들이 난무하고, 수천 명이 모여 조각상을 세워놓고 예배를 올린다. 이들의 시선 앞에 서있는 것은 성모마리아가 아닌, 망토를 뒤집어쓴 해골! 바로 ‘죽음의 여신’인 ‘산타 무에르떼’다. 최근 멕시코를 휩쓸고 있는 이색종교 ‘산타 무에르떼’의 실상과 이면을 이야기한다.
구원의 믿음? 악마 숭배?
왁자한 동대문시장을 방불케 하는 멕시코시티의 떼삐또 거리. 마약과 범죄로 들끓는 멕시코에서도 가장 위험하기로 손꼽히는 우범지역이다. 경찰의 허락을 받아 어렵게 거리로 들어선 취재진. 곳곳에 해골상을 파는 가게들이 늘어서 있고 어디선가 죽음의 여신을 찬양하는 노랫소리가 흘러나왔다. 취재진은 해골상을 대중 앞에 최초로 공개했다는 작은 예배당을 찾았다. ‘산타 무에르떼’에게 기도와 공물을 바치기 위해 차례를 기다리는 수많은 사람들! 각양각색의 해골상과 꽃다발을 안고 기도하는 사람들 속에는 무릎을 꿇은 채 고행을 하는 이들도 보였다. 갓 출소한 범죄자와 마약중독자, 어린 소녀와 신혼부부, 그리고 백발 할머니... 남녀노소를 불문한 그들이 석상 앞에 내놓는 공물 또한 기상천외했다. 돈, 빵, 과일, 초, 심지어 술과 담배까지! ‘산타 무에르떼’가 가장 좋아하는 공물이 술과 담배라고 한다. 도대체 왜 이토록 해괴한 종교에 사람들은 열광하고 있는 것일까?
돈과 명예, 행운과 복수를 비는 생계형 종교
“죽음만이 세상에서 가장 공평합니다” 예배당을 운영하는 엔리케타 로메로(64)씨는 54년째 산타 무에르떼를 섬기고 있다. 선물받은 해골상을 사람들과 나누고 싶어 전시했을 뿐인데, 자연스레 신도들이 몰려들었단다. “총에 맞은 나를 구해줬어요”, “36년형을 선고받았는데 6년 만에 출소했죠”, “죽어가는 내 딸을 살려줬어요”. 죽음의 여신이 자신의 소원을 이루어주었다고 굳게 믿는 사람들. 반면 정통 가톨릭의 입장은 다르다. 소칼로 성당의 호세신부는 이것이 주술과 우상숭배로 얼룩진 이단에 불과하며, 사람들의 잘못된 믿음이 범죄로 이어지고 있다고 걱정했다. “산타 무에르떼는 죽음에 대한 숭배보다는 죄를 짓기 위한 수단으로 사용되고 있습니다. 사람들은 살인, 납치, 마약을 하면서 죽음에서 벗어나기 위해 기도하죠” 죽음의 상징인 해골은, 더 이상 숭배의 대상이 아닌 반항과 협박의 수단일 뿐이라고 신부는 덧붙였다.
권총강도가 난무하는 치안부재의 도시, 사람들의 선택은
하루에만 평균 5건의 강력사건이 길거리에서 버젓이 일어나는 떼삐또 거리. 30개의 자물쇠도 아무 소용없이, 일년에 한번 꼴로 권총강도를 당한다고 전한 현지교포는 이제 강도가 들이닥쳐도 별로 놀랍지 않다고 푸념했다. 이런 위험한 공기 속에서도 생업을 위해 살아갈 수밖에 없는 이들에게, 사랑과 평화를 부르짖는 정통 가톨릭이 아무런 현실의 위안이 되지 못한지는 이미 오래다.
날이 갈수록 불안한 생계와 어지러운 치안. 응답하지 않는 신과 무책임한 국가에게서 기댈 곳을 잃은 사람들은 이제 ‘죽음’에게 소원을 빌고 있었다. 오늘도 해골에게 자신의 소원을 담은 색색의 옷을 입히고, 공물을 바치는 떼삐또의 사람들. 해골신의 앙상한 품은 과연 그들을 보듬어줄 수 있을까?

Money, honor, luck and revenge
"Death is the most fair in the world." Enrique Taro Romero, 64, who runs the chapel, has been serving Santa Muerta for 54 years. I wanted to share the gift of the skeleton with the people, but I naturally exhibited it. "I saved my shot," "I was sentenced to 36 years, and I got out in six years." "I saved my dying daughter.". Those who firmly believe that the goddess of death has made her wish come true. The orthodox Catholic position is different. Father Jose of Socallo's Cathedral was worried that this was merely a heresy stained with witchcraft and idolatry, and that the false beliefs of people were leading to crime. "Santa Muerte is used as a means of guilt rather than worship of death. People pray for murder, kidnapping and drug abstinence from the dead.
