미국 최초의 시각 장애인 요리사 로라, 꿈을 요리하다
이른 아침 로라의 출근길! 그녀의 걸음보다 더 분주히 출근을 서두르는 것은 바로 그녀의 손이다. 그녀는 손에 들린 지팡이로 쉴 새 없이 땅을 치며 걸음을 옮긴다. 앞을 볼 수 없는 그녀는 외출 시 늘 지팡이와 선글라스를 챙긴다. 한걸음도 자유롭게 떼지 못하지만 그녀의 외출은 언제나 즐겁다. “장애는 사람들이 우리를 구별하려고 쓰는 용어예요. 내게 장애는 상표 같은 이름일 뿐이에요.” 오늘은 그녀가 미국 최고 레스토랑 찰리트로터로 출근한지 일주일 째 되는 날! 로라가 들어오면서 찰리트로터 주방은 더욱 활기차졌다. 앞을 보지 못하는 그녀를 위해 모든 과정과 동선을 소리로 이야기하기 때문이다. 불과 칼이 오가는 위험천만한 곳, 사람과 온갖 재료가 뒤엉킨 주방에서 앞을 볼 수 없는 그녀는 대체 어떻게 요리를 하는 것일까? 망설임 없이 능숙한 칼질! “로라는 요리를 아주 잘해요.” 동료의 인정을 받는 능력 있는 요리사인 로라. 하지만 그녀의 주방입성은 쉽지 않았다. “제가 맞서는 장애는 바로 사람들에게 기회를 달라고 설득하는 일이예요.” 일반인들 몇 배의 노력과 시간, 한 번도 본 적 없는 재료들을 향과 촉감으로 기억해야 하는 고난도의 작업! 하지만 그녀는 포기하지 않았고 사람들은 서서히 그녀의 장애가 아닌 요리 실력에 주목했다. 그리고 마침내 그녀에게 특별한 기회가 왔다. 바로 미국 최고요리사인 찰리트로터! 그녀의 기사를 본 그는 로라를 자신의 레스토랑 주방직원으로 채용했다.
