케냐 나이로비에 사는 23세 청년 에반스 와돈고는 지금까지 1만개가 넘는 빛의 저장 공간을 만들었다. 바로 태양열 전등이다. 전기 없이 태양열 충전만으로 사용이 가능한 전등을 수년째 만들고 있지만, 정작 그의 집에서는 이 전등을 단 하나도 볼 수가 없다. 에반스의 태양열 전등은, 완성되기 전부터 이미 그 주인들이 정해져 있기 때문이다. 자그마치 10,000개의 빛. 그 많은 태양열 전등은 모두 어디로 간 것일까?
적도의 깊은 어둠, 그 속에 사는 사람들
전체 인구 중 약 18%. 케냐에서 전기의 혜택을 누리고 있는 사람들의 수다. 수도 나이로비에서만 약 1/3 이상의 사람들은 전기가 없는 생활을 하고 있다. 에반스가 전등을 들고 찾아가는 곳은 바로 이런 전기 없는 마을이다. 어둠이 내리면 마을 사람들이 할 수 있는 것은 거의 없다. 주부는 부엌일을 할 수 없고 아이는 책을 볼 수 없다. 해가 떨어진 뒤에도 무언가를 하기 위해서 그들이 쓸 수 있는 방법은 장작을 때거나 등유 램프를 켜는 일. “장작 연기는 너무 매워 눈과 코가 아프고 등유는 너무 비싸 살 엄두도 나지 않아요.” 취재진에게 집 안 가득히 남아있는 그을음의 흔적을 보여주며 마을 주민이 말했다. 실제로 전기가 없는 마을에 사는 사람들은 한 끼 식사 해결도 빠듯한 빈민들. 음식을 살 돈도 부족해 굶는 게 일상인 그들에게 등유는 그저 사치품일 뿐. 게다가 장작을 땔 때 나는 매캐한 연기는 금세 눈과 코를 괴롭히고, 아이들의 시력에까지 악영향을 미친다. 평생을 지배한 가난에 길들여졌듯, 빛이 없는 어둠에도 길들여져 버린 사람들. 이들은 그저 태양이 떠오를 내일을 기다리며 묵묵히 오늘 밤을 지내고 있다.
