홍차향에 이끌려 찾아간 곳, 누와라엘리야 홍차 농장
콜롬보의 한 시장에 들어서자마자 온 거리가 홍차향으로 가득했다. 홍차의 나라에서 직접 만들어주는 밀크티를 맛본 제작진. 잊을 수 없는 맛의 출처를 찾아, 실론섬 중남부에 위치한 ‘누와라엘리야’ 홍차농장으로 향했다. ‘동양의 스위스’라 불릴 만큼 깨끗하고 아름다운 경치와 시설을 갖춘 이곳은 이미 세계적으로 잘 알려진 휴양지. 거기에 드넓게 펼쳐진 푸른 홍차밭! 그리나 그곳에는, 찻잎을 따는 여인들의 고운 손길 대신 검은 상처로 가득한 어느 여인들의 눈물과 한숨이 깃들어 있었다. 남자가 들기도 무거운 바구니를 머리에 이고 하루종일 고된 노동에 짓눌려사는 여인들. 바로 스리랑카의 최하 천민계층으로 분류되는 ‘인도타밀족’ 여인들이다.
전 민족적인 왕따, 인도타밀족의 슬픈 운명
“하루에 20kg 정도 찻잎을 따야 일당을 받을 수 있어요” 농장에서 일한지 올해로 24년째인 조디(43). 온종일 일해 받는 돈은 아이들을 키우는데 턱없이 부족하지만, 신분 때문에 다른 일은 할 수 없기에 홍차밭을 떠날 수 없다는 그녀. ‘불가촉천민’이라는 오래된 단어가 스리랑카에는 현존하고 있었다. 천민층으로 분류되는 타밀족은 지배층 싱할라족으로부터 소외되어 전국적인 ‘왕따’를 당해온지 오래. 200년 전, 인도 남부지역에서 영국인들에게 끌려온 타밀족들은 영국 귀족을 위한 홍차농장에 강제로 투입됐고, 오랜 세월 고된 노동과 천대에 시달리면서도, 그들은 그것을 운명이라 믿으며 고통을 대물림하고 있었다. 그런데 모두가 외면하는 그들에게 선뜻 손내밀어 눈물을 닦아주는 따뜻한 손길이 있었다. 바로 한국인 선교사 이문성, 이수영씨 부부다.
타밀족의 눈물을 닦아주는 사람들
이문성씨 부부가 처음 스리랑카를 찾은 것은 10년 전. 여행 차 이곳 누아라엘리야 홍차농장을 찾았다가, 일하는 사람들의 어려움을 보고 작은 도움이 되고자 정착하게 됐다고. 아내 이수영씨는 차밭 여인들의 아이들을 위한 보육원을 운영하고, 남편 이문성씨는 타밀족 아이들로 구성된 축구팀을 만들어 활동하고 있었다. 신분차이 때문에 아이들이 주눅들 것을 우려해 곁에서 같이 뛰는 이문성씨의 땀방울이 눈부셨다. 때마침 열린 축구시합에서 싱할라팀을 꺾은 타밀팀 아이들! 이곳에서 축구는, 타밀족 아이들이 즐길 수 있는 유일한 스포츠라고 했다.
