“한국 정말 좋아요” “한국 가고 싶어요” “한국 사람들은 다 착해요” 너나 할 것 없이 한국 칭찬에 입을 모으는 이들. 바로 네팔인들이다. 네팔은 지금 한류열풍으로 뜨겁다. 한국어를 배우는 사람만 연간 수십만에 이르고 직접 한국을 찾는 이들도 부지기수! 하지만 몰려오는 네팔 이주노동자들을 바라보는 한국의 시선은 싸늘했다. 무너진 코리안 드림, 네팔인들의 뜨거운 눈물을 만나본다.
네팔을 뒤흔드는 한류 열풍, 비극의 시작
곳곳에 즐비한 한국 상점부터 사람들의 패션에 이르기까지, 네팔은 온통 한국으로 물들어 있었다. 거센 한류열풍은 극심한 취업난과 맞물려 네팔의 젊은이들을 한국으로 이끌었고, 많은 이들이 부푼 기대를 안고 한국행을 택했다. 그러나 결국 깊은 상처만 안은 채 고국으로 되돌아오는 이들. 그들이 ‘관광객’이 아닌 ‘이주노동자’로 한국을 찾았기 때문이다. 대체 한국 땅에서, 그들에게 어떤 일이 있었던 것일까.
18년 동안의 삶의 터전, 강제추방으로 사라지다
유창한 한국어, 한국인을 빼닮은 외모! 한국에서 18년 간 이주노동을 한 미누(39) 씨는 공장과 이주노동자 방송 등 여러 분야에서 일하다가 지난해 10월, 예고도 없이 고국으로 강제추방 됐다. “한국은 이주노동자 수용에 있어선 선진국답지 못해요” 18년 만에 돌아온 네팔은 모든 것이 달라져 있었고, 그는 한참을 헤매야 했다. 고국이 낯설어져 버린 것은 미누 뿐만이 아니다. 한국에서 어부로 일했던 아마르(25) 역시 강제추방 당해 네팔로 돌아왔다. 한국행에 소요된 비용으로 빚만 잔뜩 짊어진 그는 일자리를 찾기 전에는 고향에 돌아가지 못하는 처지. 고된 노동을 하고도 빈 몸으로 쫓겨나는 이주노동자들이 넘쳐나자 미누는 그들을 위해 새로운 일을 시작했다. 바로 이주노동을 꿈꾸는 이들을 위한 다큐멘터리를 제작하는 것! “생각과 현실이 다르다는 것을 알리고 싶어요. 제2의 미누가 더 이상 없었으면 합니다” 하지만 이 일 역시 쉽지만은 않다. 새 삶을 위해 한국을 찾은 젊은이들의 귀국 이후 생활은 더욱 피폐해지고 있다.
