대서양 연안 서부아프리카의 관문 세네갈. 까만 얼굴의 아이들이 유럽 프로리그 진출을 희망으로 공을 차는 이곳 세네갈에는 축구보다 더 인기 있는 스포츠가 있다. 바로 부와 명예를 동시에 얻게 해준다는 국민스포츠, ‘뤼트’! 가난한 이들에게 인생역전을 꿈꾸게 하는 희망의 한판승, 그 뜨거운 현장을 <W>가 생생하게 전한다.
세네갈 사람들의 꿈! 뤼트 챔피언
지난 4일, 세네갈 독립 50주년을 기념하는 뤼트 챔피언전이 수도 다카르에서 열렸다. 경기장에 모인 관중만 2만여 명! 어부들은 그물을 내려놓은 채 경기장으로 달려갔고, 경기장에 닿지 못한 사람들은 중계 라디오에서 귀를 뗄 줄 모른다. 씨름과 레슬링, 복싱이 합쳐진 것 같은 세네갈 전통스포츠 ‘뤼트’가 이들에게 더 매력적인 이유는 뤼트 챔피언이 곧 부와 명예의 상징이기 때문. 챔피언급인 타이슨과 예키니는 세네갈 사람들의 선망의 대상이다.
고단한 일상 속 멀고 험한 챔피언의 길
50%에 가까운 높은 실업률과 높은 물가에 시달리는 세네갈. 이곳 인구의 20%는 1달러 미만으로 하루를 산다. 뤼트 챔피언이 되는 길은 멀고 험하지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 새벽부터 바닷가에서 훈련에 열을 올리는 선수들. 기니에서 챔피언의 꿈을 안고 다카르를 찾은 말란잘로(20) 역시 훈련에 한창이다. “기니에는 세네갈보다 일자리도 없고, 뤼트를 연습할 해변도 없어요” 생활비를 벌기 위해 훈련 후 곧장 일자리로 향하는 그는 고철을 이용해 화덕을 만드는 작업장에서 온종일 일하고 고작 천 원을 받는다. 현재 정식 등록된 뤼트선수는 약 3천 명, 뤼트의 꿈을 키우고 있는 이들은 10만 여 명에 이른다. 하지만 실제로 챔피언이 될 확률은 그리 높지 않다. 정식 선수 3천 명 중에서도, 15명 정도만이 챔피언이 될 수 있는 것이다.
마을리그 챔피언, 세네갈 재패를 꿈꾸다!
세네갈에서는 챔피언리그 외에도 크고 작은 마을단위 리그가 열린다. 마을리그는 챔피언리그로 가기 위한 관문. 전국 챔피언의 꿈을 향해 조금씩 전진하고 있는 마을리그 챔피언 들리버두(22). “내 이름을 기억하세요! 1,2년 후에는 내가 챔피언이 될 거니까” 8년 간 뤼트선수로 활약한 아버지의 못다 이룬 꿈을 위해, 그리고 가족들의 행복을 위해 오늘도 힘찬 펀치를 날리는 그! 뤼트로 희망을 꿈꾸는 세네갈 사람들의 이야기
