인도 오리사주의 남부 도시 라야가디를 채우는 장엄한 산, 니얌기리. 수려한 산세를 뽐내는 니얌기리에는 이 산을 어머니라 부르는 사람들이 살고 있다. 바로 인도 마지막 원시부족 동그리아 콘드! 외부와의 교류조차 쉽지 않은 깊은 산 속에서 펼쳐지는 마지막 원시, 그 생생한 현장이 W에서 공개된다.
인도의 ‘나비족’, 동그리아 콘드족을 찾아서
인도 콜카타에서 차로 25시간을 달린 끝에 라야가디에 도착한 제작진. 하지만 마지막 원시로 가기 위해선 험한 산속을 12km 더 걸어야 했다. 쉬지 않고 4시간을 걸었을 때 마침내 마을이 나타났다. 형형색색의 머리핀과 꽃으로 뒤덮인 머리칼, 여러 개의 코걸이, 화려한 색의 천을 몸에 휘감은 사람들! 머리부터 발끝까지 휘황찬란하게 치장한 그들은 온몸으로 원시의 화려함을 뽐내고 있었다. 바로 인도 마지막 원시부족, 동그리아 콘드다.
수백 년을 니얌기리 산 속에서 살아온 콘드족. 문명의 혜택이라고는 찾아볼 수 없는 이곳에서 그들은 어떻게 살아갈까? 식재료는 물론이오, 소소한 생활용품에 이르기까지 그들은 삶에 필요한 것들을 니얌기리의 대자연속에서 얻는다. W는 부족의 채집활동을 따라나섰다. 신발을 신고도 걷기 힘든 산길을 맨발로 걷는 사람들을 따라 도착한 곳은 ‘모후아’라는 꽃이 피는 나무 앞. 콘드족은 모후아 꽃 열매를 따서 팔거나 술을 담가먹는다. 이들은 산속에서 작은 것이라도 얻을 때면 늘 곳곳에 차려놓은 제단에서 제를 올린다. 양의 피부터, 가축까지 제물로 받치며 니얌기리의 무한한 베풂에 감사를 표하는 것! “우리는 니얌기리에서 모든 것을 얻어요. 이 산은 우리에게 황금과 같고 이것 없이는 살 수 없어요.” 생활방식은 물론 언어까지 그들은 오직 그들만의 방식으로 살아가고 있었다.
현실 속의 <아바타>. 마지막 원시, 위기가 찾아오다
니얌기리를 어머니라 여기며 삶을 이어 온 콘드족. 그런데 최근, 이들의 삶을 뒤흔드는 절체절명의 위기가 찾아왔다. 바로 국제적 광산회사 베단타에서 니얌기리 개발을 시작한 것! 베단타는 보크사이트(알루미늄 원광) 채광을 위해 콘드족의 성산 니얌기리를 무자비하게 파헤치고 있다. 제련소 건설은 물론 산허리를 잘라 광물운반용 컨베이어 설치까지! 값비싼 광물을 차지하려는 기업과 삶을 위해 이를 막으려는 원시부족 동그리아 콘드! 영화 <아바타>의 이야기가 현실에서도 일어난 것이다.
천혜의 환경을 간직한 니얌기리에서 자연에 순응하며 살아온 콘드족. 하지만 베단타의 개발이 진행되면서 그들의 삶은 걷잡을 수 없는 혼란에 휩싸였다. 수백 년 동안 오염이란 것을 모르고 살아온 이들. 니얌기리의 자연은 물론 자신들의 건강까지 위협하는 충격적인 공장매연에 그들은 분노했다. “싸울 것이다. 절대로 우리 산을 주지 않을 거다. 왜냐면 이 산은 우리의 어머니이기 때문이다” 산을 지키려는 콘드족의 의지는 굳건했다. 무자비한 자원개발은 그들을 야생을 뛰어넘어 도로에까지 서게 했다. 국제 NGO 단체와 함께 광산 건설현장을 찾아 길을 막으며 투쟁한 것이다. 그들의 강력한 투쟁에도 불구하고 거대기업과의 싸움은 쉽지 않았다. 하지만 그들은 포기하지 않았다. 지난 2월, <아바타>의 감독 제임스카메론에게 공개서한을 보낸 것이다! “아바타 속 자원 전쟁이 실제로 일어나고 있습니다. 우리를 도와주세요.” 어머니의 산 니얌기리를 지키기 위한 이들의 절박한 외침! 마지막 원시는 과연 살아남을 수 있을까?
