대(大)고려를 꿈꾼 희대의 여걸, 천추태후
고려 제 7대 왕 목종의 어머니로 12년 동안 섭 정했던 왕건의 손녀 천추태후. 자주와 사대, 전 통과 화풍(華風)이란 갈림길에 서 1000년 전 그 녀의 선택은 무엇이었을까?
2008년 11월. KBS 대하드라마로 만나보는 천추태후. 역사 속에 숨겨진 그녀의 진실을 <한국 사 傳>에서 먼저 만나본다.
불륜녀로 낙인찍힌 헌애왕후 - 여성정치가 천추태후로 부활하다!
막강한 지방 호족 세력의 후손인 헌애왕후 황보씨 는 고려 5대 왕 경종의 셋째비가 되었으나, 18세 젊은 나이에 과부가 된다. 이후 헌애왕후는 외척이 었던 김치양과 가까워지고, 서로 정을 통한다.
당시 고려사회는 조선과 달리 여성의 지위와 권리 가 보장되고 여성의 성이 억압되지 않은 사회였다.
그러나 유교에 심취했던 성종은 자신의 여동생인 헌애왕후에게 유교식 수절을 강요하고 김치양 마저 유배 보낸다.
997년 성종이 후사 없이 세상을 떠나고, 헌애왕후 의 아들이 목종으로 즉위. 막강한 권력을 손에 쥔 천추태후의 시대가 시작된다.
목종이 왕위에 오르자 어머니에게
응천계성정덕왕태후(應天啓聖靜德王太后)라는
존호를 올렸다. 태후가 섭정하고 천추전에
거처하였으므로 세상에서 그를 천추태후라 불렀다.

자주와 사대, 갈림길에 선 고려 - 천추태후의 선택.
고려의 6대왕 성종. 그는 유교를 국가 통치 이념으로 삼는다. 이 과정에서 고려 전통을 폐지하고 중국식 제도와 문물을 받아들인다. 그러나 이러한 변화는 내부적으로 황제국을 지향한 고려의 위상을 스스로 제후국으로 낮추는 결과를 가져온다.
천추태후는 성종 대 외면당했던 고려의 전통을 부활 시킨다. 또한 태조 왕건의 대고구려주의를 계승하여 북진정책의 전초지였던 서경(평양)을 중시하는 정책을 펼친다. 천추태후는 이를 위해 당시 조정의 유학자들 대신, 김치양을 위시한 예성강 이북 패서 호족들을 정치적 기반으로 삼는다.
천추태후, 실리 외교로 고려의 평화를 만들다
유교 이념을 받아들이면서 사대관계를 맺은 송나라와만 외교한 성종. 결국 993년 고려는 거란의 1차 침입을 받는다.
하지만 천추태후는 급변하는 동북아 정세 속에 서 명분보다는 실리를 최우선으로 하는 외교정 책을 추진. 송과 일정한 관계를 유지하면서 당 시 신흥강국으로 떠오르던 거란과 외교관계를 시작해 북방을 안정시키고자 한다.
천추태후의 현실적 실리 외교는 효과를 발휘해, 태후의 섭정기간 동안 단 한 번의 외세침략이 없 는 시대를 맞이한다.
유학세력과의 갈등 - 기록되지 않은 천추태후의 꿈
천추태후의 전통부활과 친거란 정책은 명분을 중시했던 조정의 유학세력들로서는 받아들일 수 정책이었다. 천추태후와 유학세력 간의 갈등은 점점 증폭되어 갔다. 목종 12년. 천추태후가 거처하던 천추궁에 화재가 발생한다.
이 사건 직후 국경에 최정예 부대를 이끌던 강조가 5000군사를 이끌고 궁으 로 입성. 목종을 폐위시키고
유학자들이 지지 를 받던 대량원군을 옹립한다.
아들 목종과 함께 궁 밖으로 쫓겨난 천추태후는 고향인 황주에 내려가 21년을 더 살다가 66세의 나이로 숨을 거둔다.
유학세력과의 갈등 속에 불륜한 여자, 권력욕에 눈 먼 악랄한 왕후로 기록된 채 역사 속으로 사라진 천추태후. 그녀는 진정 불륜과 권력욕의 화신이었을까? 아니면 할아버지 왕건의 고구려 계승을 꿈꾸던 고려 최고의 여걸이었을까?
