아들을 크게 키우고 싶은 부모의 마음, 조기교육

영조 나이 마흔에 얻은 조선 왕통의 유일한 후계자, 사도세자. 그리고 세 살 때부터 시작된 유례없는 왕세자 조기교육. 영조는 세자교육관을 직접 선발하고, 구체적인 공부내용과 방법을 지시했다. 그리고 책의 내용을 문답하여 세자의 능력을 시험하곤 하였다. 또한 자신의 경험을 바탕으로 <어제자성록>, <어제상훈> 등의 교재를 직접 저술하기까지 했다.
대리청정으로 인해 만사가 탈이 났다 <한중록中>
영조는 즉위 때부터 노론에 의해 선택된 '노론의 임금'이란 정치적 부담을 안고 있었다. 아들이 자신과 같이 당쟁에 휘말리지 않기를 바랐던 아버지, 영조. 1749년, 15세의 아들은 아버지를 대신해 옥좌에 앉게 된다. 당쟁해소를 위한 영조의 승부수, 대리청정! 그러나 아버지와 아들은 성격차이를 넘어 정치적 입장까지 갈라지기 시작한다.
1755년, 결정적으로 부자 갈등의 씨앗이 되는 사건이 발생하는데... <승정원일기>를 보면 당시의 내용이 집중적으로 지워져있는 것을 발견할 수 있다. 그 때, 무슨 일이 있었던 것일까?
대화의 단절, 아버지와 아들사이를 가로막은 벽
아버지와 아들은 이미 정치적으로 멀어진 가운데 직접 만나는 기회조차 줄어들게 된다. 아들이 부왕의 문안을 미루는 일이 잦아졌기 때문이다. 절대 권력자 왕과 왕세자 사이의 멀어진 틈. 그 사이를 비집고 들어오는 세력이 있었다. 노론은 소론의 뿌리를 제거하기 위해 연일 상소를 올렸지만 세자의 대답은 한결같았다. "부종(不從: 따르지 않겠다)" 이 때 부터 노론은 세자를 직접적으로 공격하기 시작한다. 부자의 관계가 멀어진 가운데 왕세자가 낙선당에 불을 지르고, 궁녀를 죽이는 등 온갖 비행들을 저지르고 다닌다는 상소가 계속해서 올라온다. 게다가 이 모두가 아들의 정신병에서 비롯된 것이라는 의혹까지 제기되는데...
아들은 아버지를 실망시킬까 불안했고, 그 지독한 꾸짖음이 두려웠다.
"동궁께서 평상시에도 입시하라는 명령만 들으면 두려워서 벌벌 떨며 비록 쉽게 알고 있는 일이라도 즉시 대답하지 못하는 것은...너무 엄외한 데에 연유한 것입니다."

아버지를 뵙고 물러나오던 중 까무라쳐서 기절한 사건도 있었다. 특히 노론, 소론과 맞대면하는 공식적인 자리에 나갈 때마다 옷을 찢어버리는 등의 돌출행동을 보인다. "나는 한 가지 병이 깊어 나을 기약이 없으니 다만 마음을 가라앉히며 민망해 할 따름입니다." -사도세자가 장인에게 보낸 편지 中 (1755년 12월 8일) 그는 자신이 정상이 아니라는 사실을 잘 알고 있었다.

그러나 아픈 와중에도 장인에게 남한형지와 양향군무도서(한강 이남의 군사, 지도 등에 관한 책)와 같은 책을 구해달라고 부탁한다. 군주의 자질을 갖추기 위해 준비하고 있었던 것. 그런데 그는 왜 죽음을 맞이할 수밖에 없었던 것일까?

아버지는 왜 아들을 죽여야만 했는가?
"아무래도 내가 오늘 죽는가 보오..." 1762년 5월 13일, 아들은 자신의 죽음을 예감하고 있었다. 아버지의 부름을 받고 창경궁 앞뜰로 간 아들의 눈에 비친 것은 나무뒤주.
