소현세자빈 강씨, 그녀는 누구인가?
인조(1595~1649)의 며느리이자 소현세자의 아내인 강빈(민회 빈 강씨). 강빈은 과연 어떤 인물이었을까? 사료에 기록된 강 빈은 조선시대의 여성상을 뛰어넘는 파격적인 언행과 결단력 으로 수많은 어려움을 헤쳐 나간다.
Case 1. 강빈의 일갈로 배를 띄우다
1636년, 병자호란을 일으킨 청나라는 파죽지세로 한양까지 밀어닥쳤다. 소현세자와 강빈은 강화도로 피신하기 위해 나루터에서 배를 기다리지만, 피신을 맡은 검찰사 김경징이 자신의 식솔만 챙긴 탓에 발이 묶여 버린다. 일행이 추위와 배고픔에 시달리자, 강빈이 나섰다. “경징아, 네가 어찌 이런 짓을 하느냐!” 강빈의 일갈에 깜짝 놀란 김경징. 그때서야 배를 내어 세자와 강빈은 무사히 강을 건널 수 있었다.
Case 2. 강빈, 원손을 몰래 도망치게 하다
천신만고 끝에 강화산성으로 피신했지만 청군에게 성이 함락되는 것은 시간문제였다. 강빈은 물론 왕통을 이을 원손의 생사도 장담할 수 없자, 강빈이 결단을 내린다. “나와 대군(소현세자)은 이곳에서 죽을 것이나 원손이 죽는 것은 차마 볼 수 없다. 너희는(내관) 이 아이를 데리고 피해라. 불행히 강을 못 건너면 산골짜기에 숨어 있어라. 죽든 살든 너희들이 잘 처리해라”
Case 3. 조선 법도를 깨고 말을 탄 강빈
병자호란 패배 후, 청나라 인질로 끌려간 강빈. 강빈이 심양에 도착했을 때 예기치 못한 상황이 벌어진다. 황제가 있는 곳에선 어느 누구도 가마를 탈 수 없다는 것이다. 그러나 조선 법도 상 세자빈이 말을 탄다는 것은 상상할 수 없는 일이었다. 곤란해 하는 조선 관리와 완강한 청나라 관리 사이에서 강빈은 결심한다. 그리고 스스로 가마에서 내려 말을 타고 들어간다!
▶ 소현세자빈 강씨, 새로운 조선을 꿈꾸다
강빈, 심양관의 여성 CEO가 되다
강빈과 소현세자를 포함한 조선인 192명은 중국 심양관에 거주하며 힘겨운 인질 생활을 시작했다. 유목민족으로 군사력은 강하지만 문화 적 수준이 떨어졌던 청나라는 조선의 물품을 필요로 하게 된다. 심지 어 청 왕족인 팔왕(八王)마저 면포, 수달피, 백자 등의 밀거래를 요청 하는 상황! 강빈은 이런 상행을 적극적으로 활용해 청나라인과 활발한 거래를 시작하고, 이후 심양관은 일국의 주청 조선 무역대표부가 된 다. 소현세자는 청 황제의 수행으로 심양관을 비우는 일이 잦았기 때 문에 강빈은 세자의 역할을 대신해 조선에 보내는 장계까지 직접 챙 기며 심양관의 실질적 경영자, 여성 CEO가 된다.
강빈, 조선판 쉰들러 리스트를 만들다
청과의 거래로 상당한 부가 축적된 심양관. 그러나 생각지 못한 위기가 닥친다. 청이 심양관에 식량 공 급을 중단하고 직접 농사를 지어 생계를 해결하라는 것이었다. 인질 생활의 장기화를 염려한 조선 관리들 의 거센 반대에도 불구하고 강빈은 이 제안을 받아들 인다. 강빈은 청나라에 끌려온 조선인들을 속환해 농 장에서 일하게 하고, 인센티브 제도를 도입해 생산성 을 높였다. 조선의 우수한 농사기술은 해가 거듭될 수록 큰 수확을 이뤄, 심양관에는 한해 필요한 양의 3배가 넘는 곡식이 쌓이기에 이르렀다. 강빈은 심양관의 재력을 바탕으로 청에 끌려온 수백 명의 조선인 포로들을 해방시키며 조선판 쉰들러 리스트를 만들어 낸다.
아담 샬과의 교류 - 천주교와 과학기술을 배우다
청이 명나라를 멸망시키고 수도를 북경으로 옮기자, 강빈과 소현세자도 북경으로 거주지를 옮긴다. 세자 는 자금성 근처에 있는 남당(南堂)에서 예수회 소 속 천주교 신부이자 천문학자인 ‘아담 샬’과 깊은 교 류를 맺게 된다. 아담 샬은 세자와 강빈에게 천주교 교리와 천문학, 서양의 최신 과학기술을 전하고 천 문, 산학, 성교정도 등의 책과 여지구, 천주상 등을 선물로 주었다. 소현세자와 강빈은 서양 책과 물건들이 조선의 발전에 큰 도움이 될 것이라 기뻐하며 중국인 천주교 신자들과 함께 조선으로 귀국한다.
▶ 시대를 앞선 죄... 강빈의 최후
남편의 죽음, 감금과 사산, 그리고 사약…
1645년, 인질 생활 8년 만에 돌아온 강빈과 소현세 자. 그러나 인조의 반응은 차가웠다. 청의 힘을 빌려 왕의 자리를 넘보려 한다는 정치적 라이벌 의식을 느낀 것이다. 결국 귀국 2달 만에 소현세자는 돌연 죽음을 맞는다. 독살로 의심되는 의문의 죽음이었다. 그러나 인조는 아들의 죽음에 대한 진상조사를 덮어 둔 채, 국법을 어기고 원손(소현세자와 강빈의 아들) 이 아닌 봉림대군(소현세자의 동생)에게 왕위를 물려 준다. 그 뒤, 인조의 칼날은 강빈을 향했다. 아녀자 로서 바깥일에 깊숙이 개입했으며, 왕을 독살하려 했 고, 중전을 뜻하는 ‘내전’의 칭호를 사용했다는 점 등 의 이유를 들어 강빈을 역적으로 몰은 것이다. 결국 강빈은 후원 별당에 감금되고 만다. 당시 임신 상태 였던 강빈은 결국 아기를 사산하고, 궁궐에서 폐출됐 다. 인조는 신하들의 거센 반대에도 불구하고 강빈에게 사약을 내린다. 시대를 앞선 여성 경영자의 죽음이자, 조선 역사의 슬픔이었다.
