조선의 마지막 왕녀, 덕혜옹주의 파란만장한 삶
대한제국의 멸망 후 태어난‘덕수궁의 꽃’, 덕혜옹주. 그녀는 아버지 고종과 조선민중의
사랑을 받으며 성장한다. 그러나 고종이 독살을 당하고, 일본에 강제로 유학을 떠나게 되면서
그녀는 조발성 치매증(정신분열증)을 앓게 된다. 일본의 강압에 의해 일본인과 정략결혼을
해야만 했고, 일본이 패전한 후엔 정신병원에 버려진 조선의 마지막 왕녀, 덕혜옹주.
그녀의 인생은 우리 근대사가 치른 고통 그 자체였다.

고종의 아들 의친왕의 손녀로, 고종의 증손녀인 이홍 이홍 씨가 직접 덕혜옹주 역을 맡아 덕혜의 비극적인 삶 을 재연, 오직 그녀만이 할 수 있는 연기를 선보였다. 또한 직접 스튜디오에 나와 집안에서 전해지는 덕혜옹주의 정신병에 관한 이야기를 들려주었다.

나라를 잃고, 2년 후 덕수궁에 꽃이 피다
나라를 빼앗긴 뒤에도 봄날은 찾아왔고, 1912년 봄, 멸망한 조선의 왕실에서 새 생명이 태어났다. 고종이 환갑에 늦둥이 딸, 덕혜옹주를 얻은 것이다. 아버지의 마음은 애틋했다. 그는 왕실의 법도를 어기면서까지 50일 된 딸을 자신의 거처, 함녕전으로 데려왔고, 다섯 살이 되던 해에는 덕수궁의 즉조당에 유치원을 세워주기까지 했다. 그러나 조선 왕족의 힘을 말살시키려는 일본에게 딸을 빼앗길까 두려웠던 고종. 비밀리에 덕혜옹주의 약혼을 추진하는데...
과연 일본으로부터 덕혜옹주를 지켜낼 수 있을 것인가?
8살, 아버지 고종이 의문의 죽음을 맞이하다.
1919년 1월 22일, 고종 서거. 고종의 죽음이 일본의 사주에 의한 독살이라는 소문이 돌자 조선의 민중은 분노했고, 고종의 국장에 맞춰 대규모의 3.1운동이 일어난다. 총독부는 민중을 움직이는 조선 왕족의 강력한 힘을 다시금 확인하게 된다.
고종을 쏙 빼닮은 분신으로 국민을 매료시키는 덕혜옹주를 경계하는 일본.
14살, 일본으로의 강제유학 그리고 독살의 공포.
덕혜옹주에게 일본 유학 명령이 내려진다. 옹주가 조선을 떠난 뒤에도 그녀를 향한 대중의 애정은 한결같았다. 조선, 동아일보는 조선왕실의 마스코트인 덕혜옹주의 일거수일투족을 보도하며 그녀에 대한 지속적인 관심을 드러내었다. 강압에 의해 일본에 끌려갔던 덕혜옹주. 그녀의 심정은 어땠을까?
덕혜옹주의 여자학습원 동창생의 증언록에서 그녀의 심경을 추측해볼 수 있는 기록을 찾을 수 있었다.
덕혜옹주는 늘 보온병을 들고 다녔기에 어느 날 "왜 그렇게 많은 보온병을 들고 다니냐"고 물었더니 "독살을 피하기 위해서"라고 대답했다."
적국의 땅에서 늘 독살의 공포에 시달렸던 14살의 덕혜옹주. 어느 날 동갑내기 학급친구, 소마 유키카가 덕혜를 질책하는 한마디를 던졌다. "내가 당신의 입장이라면 독립운동에 나섰을 텐데 당신은 왜 여기 있나요?"
조선의 왕녀로서 독립운동에 나서지 않는 자신을 꾸짖는 일본인 친구에게 덕혜옹주는 어떤 대답을 했을까?
20살, 일본 남자와의 정략결혼. 그 후 고국에서 잊혀 지다.
1931년 5월 이후부터 조선의 신문에선 덕혜옹주에 관한 기사가 자취를 감추게 된다. 덕혜옹주가 소오타케유키백작과 결혼하게 되면서 조선 민중들이 덕혜옹주에게서 등을 돌리게 된 것. 결국 일본의 의도대로 조선은 조선의 마지막 왕녀를 잊기 시작한다.
조국에서 고립된 덕해옹주 1년 후 딸을 낳게 되는데... 아버지 고종을 그대로 닮은 아이,마사에(正惠)였다.
35살, 그녀가 사는 곳은... 정신병원
