▶ 홍종우가 최초로 번역한 춘향전, 미하일 포킨의 발레극으로 부활
조선 최초의 프랑스 유학생 홍종우. 그는 춘향전을 불어로 번역해 ‘향기로운 봄’이란 제목의 책 으로 출판했다. 러시아 안무가의 거장 미하일 포킨은 ‘향기 로운 봄’을 원작으로 ‘사랑의 시련’이란 발레극을 제작했는 데, ‘사랑의 시련’은 현재까지 유럽인들의 사랑을 받으며 공 연되고 있다.
▶ 김옥균의 일본 망명생활 10년에 대한 증언
김옥균은 10년간의 망명생활을 통해 일본 고위층 인사들과 긴밀한 교류를 가진다. 그 중 한명인 도야마 미치루는 훗날 명성황후를 시해한 조직인 ‘겐요사’를 만들어 정계를 장악한 인물. 한국사 傳 제작진이 도야마 미치루의 손자를 만나, 당시 정 황과 관련 사진을 취재했다.

갑신정변 실패 후 일본으로 망명한 김옥균. 그가 죽기 전, 일본에 남긴 한시에는 정치를 벗어난 인간 김옥균으로서의 감정과 생각이 담겨있다. 한국사 傳 제작진이 최초로 김옥균의 유작을 공개한다!
홍종우가 쏜 세 발의 탄환, 김옥균을 관통하다
1894년 3월 28일 오후 4시. 중국 상하이의 뚱허양행 호텔. 김옥균은 시내를 구경하기 위해 미리 마차를 빌려놓고 호텔 방 침대에서 쉬고 있었다. 이 때 갑자기 들어온 홍종우가 권총을 꺼내 방아쇠를 당긴다. 세 발의 탄환은 얼굴과 가슴, 어깨를 관통 했고, 김옥균은 그 자리에서 즉사했다. 범인으로 붙잡힌 홍종우. 그러나 그의 태도는 당당했다. “김옥균은 우리나라의 재상으로 대역부도한 사건에 연루되어 몇 백 명을 죽였다. 그런데 그는 일본으로 도피해 이름까지 바꿨다. 나는 김옥균을 죽여 왕의 마음을 편하게 해드린 것이다.”
홍종우는 왜 김옥균을 죽였을까?
갑신정변 실패 후, 일본으로 망명한 김옥균은 ‘이와다’라는 일본이름을 사용하고 뛰어난 언변으로 일본인들에게 열렬한 지지와 명성을 얻는다. 이런 김옥균의 행동은 일본의 힘을 빌려 조선을 개혁시키려 한다는 모의설로 발전돼 朝野新聞에 보도되고, 이는 조선 조정을 극도로 불안하게 만든다. 때문에 홍종우의 김옥균 암살은 조선에서 대대적인 환영을 받고 홍종우는 고종의 절대적인 신임을 얻는다. 김옥균의 시신은 양화진에서 처참하게 육시돼 홍종우가 직접 쓴 ‘대역부도옥균’이란 글씨와 함께 백사장에 전시되었다.
마흔 한 살. 최초의 프랑스 유학생 홍종우
김옥균 암살 4년 전인 1890년. 홍종우는 마흔 하나의 나이에 프랑스 유학길에 오른다. 홍종우는 프랑스의 저명한 학자들과 교류를 쌓고 귀족 모임 에 초대 받는 등 파리의 지식인들을 통해 서구문화와 역사를 배운다. 파리 기메박물관에 보관되어 있는 홍종우의 사진과 명함, 근로계약서 등은 박물관에서 2년 동안 일한 홍종우의 흔적을 말해준다. 홍종우는 프랑스에 조선을 알리는 데에도 적극적이었다. 최 초의 프랑스 번역 소설인 춘향전은 홍종우의 번역으로 출판됐고, 이는 러시아 안무가 미하일 포킨에 의해 ‘사랑의 시련’이란 발레극으로 올려진다. 한국사 傳 제작진이 프랑스에서의 홍종우의 발자취를 따라 찾아갔다.
홍종우와 김옥균, 두 사람의 엇갈린 평가
홍종우는 고종에게 조선이 황제를 중심으로 자주적인 근대화를 이루어야 한다고 주장한다. 홍종우는 황제권을 절대화하는 작업에 착수하고, 대한제국의 주요 법규들을 모아 ‘법규류편 속일’을 간행해 실제 업무에 적용하도록 했다. 그러나 홍종우의 노력과 달리 조선의 운명은 ‘한일합방’으로 일본의 손아귀에 들어가게 된다. 일본은 우호적이었던 김옥균을 위인으로 세우고, 그를 암살한 홍종우를 테러리스트로 매장했다. 그리고 대한제국의 주권이 상실된 지 3년 후인 1913년, 홍종우는 생을 마감한다.
