내성천에는 멸종위기종 1급인 수달이 상류에서 하류까지 고르게 분포하고 있다.
특히 본류와 산간 계곡부에서는 수달의 흔적을 쉽게 발견할 수 있다.
수달의 서식지가 그만큼 폭넓게 형성되어 있다는 증거이며, 그들의 먹잇감이 풍부하다는 이야기다.
수달 가족의 모습은 내성천의 생태적 가치를 일깨워주는 데 충분하다.
모래톱 주변의 자갈밭을 터전삼아 살아가는 내성천의 또 다른 이웃 꼬마물떼새.
이들은 본래 모래 위나 자갈밭에 알을 낳는다.
땅 위에 만들어진 둥지는 주변에 보호막이 없어 위험에 노출되는 경우가 많기 때문에 어미 새가 새끼들을 지켜내기란 쉽지 않다.
호시탐탐 기회를 엿보는 황조롱이로부터 새끼 새를 지키고자 고군분투하는 꼬마물떼새의 모습을 통해 자연 속 모성애의 감동을 느낄 수 있다.
