물살이 거센 지족해협은 고요한 만에 비해 수중생물이 자라기 어려운 조건이다.
급류는 작은 물고기들을 떠내려 보내고, 해초류가 뿌리를 내리기에도 불리하기 때문이다.
그러나 죽방렴이 있다면 얘기가 달라진다. 바다 가운데 굳건히 자리 잡은 죽방렴 주변에는 해초들이 풍성하게 자라고, 발장에 붙어사는 생물들로 아름다운 수중정원을 이룬다.
죽방렴을 이룬 말목과 대나무발이 빠르게 흐르는 물살을 어느 정도 막아주고, 해초류와 조개류, 작은 물고기들의 서식을 돕기 때문이다.
해초류는 다시 작은 어류의 산란장이 되고, 밀물 따라 들어오는 물고기들까지 죽방렴에 들어오면 더욱 풍성한 수중세계가 펼쳐진다.
죽방렴 한 채는 바다 속의 작은 우주와 같다.
아무런 기계장치도, 환경의 훼손도 없이 수백 년 전의 방법 그대로 멸치가 제 스스로 들어오기를 기다리는 죽방렴은 자연의 순리를 거스르지 않는 어로법이다. 그래서 남해 지족해협 사람들은 대대로 죽방렴의 은빛 멸치를 기다리며 삶을 이어올 수 있었다.

Aquatic ecological garden of South Sea of Gyeongnam Namhae
The strait is a difficult condition for aquatic creatures to grow compared to serene bays.
The rapids send small fish away, and the seaweeds are also disadvantageous to rooting.
However, if there is bamboo, the story is different. Seahorse grows abundantly around the bamboo grove firmly established in the sea, and it forms a beautiful underwater garden with the creatures attached to the opening ceremony.
This is because the bamboo horseshoe and bamboo feet block some of the fast-flowing water and help form seaweeds, shellfish, and small fish.
The seaweeds are again the spawning ground for small fishes, and when the fish coming along the tide enter the bamboo grove, a richer underwater world unfolds.
One bastard is like a small universe in the sea.
Bamboo fermentation, which is waiting for the anchovy to come into its own way as it was several hundred years ago, without any machinery, no damage to the environment, is a fishery law that does not violate the natural righteousness. So the people of the Namhae Jikyo were able to continue their lives by waiting for the silvery anchovy of bamboo Buddies for generations.
