죽방렴 한 채를 설치하는 데 필요한 재료는 직경 10㎝ 이상의 대나무 1,500개와 참나무 말목 300개 등이다.
장정 10여 명이 매달려 50일~60일이 걸려야 가능한 대공사이다. 매년 새로 만들지는 않는다 해도 낡은 말목과 대나무발을 교체하는 작업은 수시로 해야 하는 일이고 혼자서는 감당할 수 없는 작업이기에 마을 사람들은 자연스럽게 죽방렴을 중심으로 한 생활 공동체가 되었다.
여럿이 함께 할 수 없었다면 진즉에 사라졌을 유산이 죽방렴인 것이다.
오늘도 바다 곁에서 달님의 시간에 맞춰 하루를 사는 사람들. 이름도 ‘족함을 안다’는 지족(知足)에서 바다가 내주는 만큼만 들어오는 멸치를 기다리는 사람들은 알고 있다.
멸치를 들이는 것은 바다지만 그 바다를 감동시키는 것은 사람의 몫이란 것을.
