자연다큐멘터리를 하면 가장 힘든 것이 ‘의사소통’이 안 된다는 점입니다.
동물들도 힘이 들지만, 작은 곤충들을 카메라에 담으려면 더욱 힘이 드는 것이 사실입니다.
MBC창사특집<곤충, 위대한 본능>팀 역시 마찬가지였습니다. 그중 촬영이 특히나 힘들었던 곤충들이 있습니다.
바로 숲속의 포악한 사냥꾼 ‘길앞잡이’와 달빛사냥꾼 ‘여섯뿔 가시거미’였습니다.
길앞잡이는 몸길이 20mm에 불과한 아주 작은 곤충입니다. 하지만 길앞잡이라는 말처럼 촬영팀보다 빨리, 그리고 멀리 움직였습니다. 그리고 아주 영리한 놈들이기에 사람이 찾기 힘들도록 정면으로 앉아있습니다.
그리고 땅속에 굴을 파고 튀어 나오는 녀석이기에 땅을 파고 들어가면 찾는 일은 보통 힘든 일이 아니었습니다.
이렇듯 힘든 촬영을 시킨 녀석이지만 길앞잡이를 찍는 이유가 있습니다. ‘포악한 사냥꾼’이란 말처럼, 개성 넘치는 외모로 애벌레들을 포악하게 사냥하기 때문입니다. 길앞잡이는 5월에서 10월까지 활동을 합니다.
날이 더워지면 몸을 곧추세워 더위를 피하고, 날이 추워지면 땅바닥에 납작하게 엎드려 몸의 온도를 조절하는 곤충입니다.
촬영이 어려웠던 곤충들촬영이 어려웠던 곤충들 여섯뿔 가시거미는 수컷은 2mm, 암컷은 8~10mm로 굉장히 작은 곤충입니다. 주로 8월에서 9월에 활동하는 거미로 거미줄을 철퇴모양으로 만들어 빙빙 돌려 나방을 사냥합니다. 철퇴모양의 거미줄에서는 암컷나방의 페로몬향이 나기 때문에 접근하는 수컷나방들이 사정거리 안에 들어왔을 때 철퇴를 돌립니다. 하지만 촬영팀이 갔을 때는 날이 조금 추워진 후였습니다. 여섯뿔 가시거미 역시 날이 추워서인지 철퇴를 자꾸만 놓쳤습니다.
그리고 밤에만 사냥을 하는 여섯뿔 가시거미는 촬영팀이 조명을 키면 밤이 아닌 낮으로 인식하고 거미줄을 거두어 들었습니다. 과연 <곤충, 위대한 본능>제작팀은 달빛 사냥꾼 ‘여섯뿔 가시거미’ 촬영에 성공했을까요?
지금까지 살펴본 곤충들은 모두 한국에서 우리의 관심과 보호를 기다리는 곤충들이었습니다.
우리의 상상을 초월할 정도로 놀라운 진화의 진화를 거듭하여 살아남았습니다. 곤충의 포식자들은 명성에 걸맞게 뛰어난 사냥실력을 갖추고 있었고, 포식자를 피하는 곤충들은 그들만의 지혜를 가지고 있었습니다.
그러나 지난 세월 동안 인간은 무분별한 자원파괴로 인해 그들의 삶의 터전을 잃어가고 있습니다.
그들이 삶의 터전을 잃어가는 만큼, 사람들은 뒤늦게 서식지 보호를 준비하고 있습니다.
하지만 터전을 잃어가는 속도만큼, 서식지 복원은 늦어지고 회복되는 속도는 더디기만 합니다.
