포유류의 전유물이라 생각한 모성애, 나나니벌과 왜코벌은 어떻게 자신의 새끼들을 지켜낼까요?
나나니벌은 석회암지대의 땅에 약 2시간에 걸쳐 자신의 애벌레가 살아갈 땅굴을 팝니다.
땅굴을 파고 나면 땅굴 입구를 큰 돌로 막아 놓고 사냥을 갑니다.
애벌레가 먹고 살아갈 먹이를 찾아서 말이죠.
주로 나비류의 애벌레를 사냥하는 나나니벌은 애벌레의 흔적이 보이면 주변을 샅샅이 뒤지기 시작합니다.
애벌레를 발견한 나나니벌은 날카로운 독침을 애벌레에게 놓습니다.
사냥한 애벌레가 마비되어 뻣뻣하게 굳게 되면, 입으로 애벌레 머리 부분을 물고 자신의 몸집보다 큰 애벌레를 땅굴로 끌고 갑니다. 그리고 땅굴을 덮은 돌멩이를 치우고 땅굴 속에 나비류 애벌레를 끌어넣습니다.
그리고 자신의 알을 사냥한 애벌레 위에 낳습니다. 알에서 부화한 나나니벌의 애벌레는 어미가 힘들게 끌고 온 먹이를 먹으며 성충이 될 준비를 할 것입니다.
