강원도 정선과 평창, 영월의 세 개 지역을 굽이굽이 흐르는 51km의 물길인 동강. 동강은 강원도의 험준한 절벽과 가파른 협곡을 따라 흐르는 전형적인 사행천(강이 구불구불 휜 상태로 흐르는 지형)이다.
4억 5000만 년 전에 융기되어 형성된 석회암층 지역인 동강 유역은 약 2억 년 전에 현재의 지형이 형성되었고, 현재도 하천운동으로 인한 퇴적작용과 침식작용이 계속 진행되고 있다.
지표운동과 지하수·석회수의 용식작용(물이 암석을 화학적으로 용해하는 작용)으로 형성된 천연동굴 등 동강은 굽이굽이 휘도는 물길과 붉은 뼝대가 빚어낸 절경을 품고 있다.
일부구간을 제외하곤 아직까지 사람의 접근이 쉽지 않은 동강은 오랜 세월 대자연속 생태계의 원형을 그대로 간직해 왔다.

The river that meanders through the river
Donggang, which is a 51km waterway that meanders through three areas of Jeongseon, Pyeongchang and Youngwol in Gangwon Province. The Dong River is a typical meandering river flowing along the rugged cliffs and steep canyons of Gangwon-do (the river flows in a twisted state).
The Donggang basin, a limestone layer formed uprooted 450 million years ago, was formed about 200 million years ago. Today, sedimentation and erosion are continuing due to river movement.
The Donggang has a spectacular view of the river, which is formed by the winding water of the spiral and the red sea breeze, including the surface movement and the natural cave formed by the solitary action of the groundwater and the limestone (the action of water chemically dissolving the rock).
With the exception of some sections, people still have difficulty accessing the Dong River, which has preserved the prototype of the natural ecosystem for many years.
