원주의자, 원나라 공주와 사랑에 빠지다
고려 31대 공민왕과 원나라 위왕(魏王)의 딸 노국공주. 이 둘의 만남은 우연이 아니었다. 당시 고려는 원 간섭을 받았는데 원은 황실의 공주를 고려왕자와 결혼시켜 고려를 부마국으로 종속시키는 정책을 폈다. 공민왕과 노국공주의 결혼도 당연히 정략결혼. 그러나 왕비 우세의 일방적인 결혼 관계였던 다른 임금 부부와는 달리 그들은 서로 사랑에 빠졌다.
숙청의 칼끝은 원나라를 향했다

당시 고려의 왕들의 존립은 원나라 황제에 달려 있었다. 원나라 세력을 등에 업은 권문세족들의 횡포는 이미 극에 달했고, 이들은 왕권 강화와 고려의 자주성 회복이라는 목표를 갖고 있던 공민왕에게 장애물 같은 존재였다.
왕위에 오른 공민왕은 결단을 내린다. 기황후의 가족을 위시한 친원세력을 처단해나가기 시작한 것이다.
노국공주, 개혁의 길을 함께 걷다
지지기반이 미약한 공민왕에게 원나라 황실가인 노국공주는 든든한 조력자였다. 비록 조국인 원나라에 반한 개혁정책이었으나 노국공주는 오히려 자신의 권위로써 공민왕을 보호해 주었다.
노국공주의 후원과 함께 공민왕의 반원개혁 정치는 눈부신 성과를 거둔다. 마침내 원나라에 함몰되었던 북방영토를 수복한 것이다. 원에 복속된 지 99년 만의 일이였다!

노국공주와 공민왕의 관계는 단순한 연인 그 이상이었다. 공민왕에게 노국공주는 든든한 정치적 동지이자 어머니와 같은 존재였고 그런 그녀의 죽음은 공민왕에게 큰 충격이었다. <고려사>에는 공주가 죽은 후 공민왕은 슬픔이 지나쳐 정신병에 걸렸다고 적고 있다.
이후 공민왕은 신돈을 등용하여 개혁정책을 이어가지만 실정을 거듭하고 결국 신하들에 의해 살해당한다. 개혁군주 공민왕, 그의 말로는 비참했다.
개혁과 사랑을 함께하다
영원히 국가를 함께 지키고 살아야 할 터인데… 슬픈 마음은 더욱 깊어만 간다.
<고려사> 고려시대 유일의 쌍릉. 그 속에 공민왕과 노국공주가 나란히 누워있다. 이 무덤의 내부엔 서로 통할 수 있도록 구멍이 뚫려 있다고 한다. 서로 다른 출신에도 불구하고 예술적 감성과 정치적 이해를 같이 했던 공민왕과 노국공주. 그들의 사랑은 서로를 향한 믿음만큼 단단했다. 역사 속에 영원히 기록될 그들의 사랑이야기, 지금 한국사 傳에서 시작된다.

The relationship between the princess and King Kongmin was more than just a lover. Princess Kunmin was a strong political comrade and her mother, and her death was a great shock to King Kongmin. In <Goryeo>, after the princess died, King Kongmin wrote that his sadness was over and he was suffering from mental illness.
After that, King Gongmin succeeded in reforming his policies by using new money, and eventually he was killed by his servants. The king of the Reformed monarch, he was miserable.
Reform and love together

<Koryo-sha> The only twin pillars of the Koryô period. In it, King Kongmin and Princess Noh are lying side by side. The inside of this grave is said to have a hole through which it can communicate with each other. In spite of their different origins, King Kongmin and Princess Kun, who shared artistic sensitivity and political understanding. Their love was as hard as faith in one another. Their love story to be recorded in history forever, now begins in Korean history.
