왜 최부자는 노블리스 오블리제의 대명사인가?
경주 교동에 위치한 최 부잣집에는 독특한 철학이 있다.
흉년이 되면 최부잣집에서는 자신들의 곳간을 헐어 양식을 나눠준다. 사방 백리 안에 굶어 죽는 사람이 없게하려는 것.
흉년은 부자들에게는 농토를 싼 값에 구입하는 절호의 기회이다. 하지만 최부잣집에서는 흉년에 절대 땅을 사지 않는다.
숙박시설이 여의치 않은 조선시대. 최부잣집은 수 많은 과객들의 쉼터였다. 어떤 손님이라도 극진히 대접. 노잣돈과 하루 양식 챙겨 보냈다.
특권층의 의무를 넘어, 사회 선을 실현했던 경주 최부자. 최부잣집은 한국 역사상 유례 없는 노블리스 오블리제의 대명사로 손꼽히게 되었다.
최부자, 그들은 누구인가!
경주 최부잣집의 유래는 어디서 시작되었을까? 경주 최부잣집의 파시조는 임진왜란 때 의병장이 되어 왜군을 물리친 최진립이다.
1636년 병자호란이 발발. 남한산성으로 피신한 인조가 적들에게 포위 당했다는 소식을 듣자, 69세의 나이에도 불구하고 출전을 감행. 아군이 수세에 몰렸지만 끝까지 물러서지 않고 순국한다. 후에 최진립은 정무공의 시호를 받고 병조판서에 추증. 무신으로서는 드물게 용산서원에 모셔진다.
최부자, 그들은 어떻게 부자가 됐을까?
양란 이후 피폐해진 조선 땅. 최부잣집에서는 관개시설을 확보. 이로 인해 새로운 농사법인 이앙법의 도입이 가능해지고, 투입되는 노동력을 크게 절감하게 된다. 또한 성과급 제도를 도입해 생산성을 높인다.
혁신적인 신농법의 도입. 지주와 소작인 모두가 함께 잘살고자 하는 상생의 원리! 이것이 경주 최부자의 부(富)의 비법이었다.
나라가 없으면 부자도 없다!
나라가 일본의 손아귀에 들어가자 최씨 문중의 장손인 최준을 고민에 빠진다. 이에 백산 안희제 선생이 최씨 문중을 방문. 함께 백산상회를 운영해 상해 임시 정부에 독립자금을 보낼 것을 제의한다.
최준은 백산상회 대표로 활동. 일제의 치열한 감시 속에서 독립자금을 마련하는 한편으로는 자신의 동생 최완을 대동청년단의 비밀요원으로 보낸다. 해방 후 김구는 최준을 경교장으로 초대, 최준의 노고를 치하한다.
영원한 부자로 남는 법-기쁘게 버려라!
해방 후 인재양성에 뜻을 품게 된 최준. 그는 400여 년 간 모아온 전 재산을 영남대학의 전신인 계림대와 대구대에 기부한다. 세계 역사 어디에서도 찾아볼 수 없는 경주 최부자의 이야기. 모든 재산을 버렸지만, 경주 최부잣집의 이름만큼은 영원히 조선 최고의 부자로 전해지고 있다.
