해녀들은 왜 스쿠버 장비를 사용하지 않을까? 해녀들의 장비는 원시적이다. 수경, 연철, 꼬챙이, 테왁, 고무 옷 등이 전부다. 해녀들은 호흡 장치의 사용을 금하고 있다.
오로지 자신의 들숨 날숨으로 수확한 것만 인정한다.
문명의 도구를 사용하면 바다밭이 순식간에 황폐화되기 때문이다. 바다밭은 독점이 아닌 마을 공동의 자산이다. 공동체에서 관리하며 오로지 자신의 노동과 능력에 따라 수확을 가져갈 뿐이다. 해녀들은 바다밭에서 소라, 전복 등 움직이는 것과 우뭇가사리, 톳 등 움직이지 않는 해조류에 대한 소유와 배분의 원칙이 따로 있다.
움직이지 않는 해조류의 수익은 일정 부분 마을 공동체에 귀속된다.
해녀들은 추운 겨울에도 물질을 하지만 작업 환경이 나은 여름에는 철저하게 물질을 금한다. 소라 등이 산란하는 6월부터 9월까지는 바다밭에 들어갈 수 없다.
공유지는 모두가 이익을 쫓아 몰려들면 당장은 큰 이익을 보지만 긴 미래에는 황폐화하고 마는 ‘공유지의 비극’이 있다. 해녀에게 바다는 직장이다.
또 해녀는 세계에서 가장 오래된 전문직 여성 다이버다.
지속가능한 미래를 내다 본 오래된 전통들이 해녀 공동체에 있다.
