야생의 생태를 다루는데 번식장면, 그중에서도 교미를 촬영하는 것은 필수조건이다. 그 자체가 대단한 것은 아니지만 생활사를 다루려면 반드시 필요한 장면이기 때문이다. 그런데 어디서 교미를 할지도 모르는데 야간에 교미를 촬영한다는 것은 무리일 수도 있다. 이미 교미하는 장면을 발견했을 때는 상황끝이 되기 십상이다.
그래서 제작진이 갖춰야 하는 것은 수리부엉이처럼 좋은 시력(어둠에서 실루엣으로라도 봐야하니까)과 휴대용 조명(충전가능하고 일정한 밝기 이상의 빛을 멀리까지 보내야 함)이다. 전자의 경우는 눈이 빠져라 어둠에 적응시켜 가능해졌고, 여러 가지 테스트를 통해 자체 개발해야했다.
긴 준비 기간을 갖는다는 것은 모든 과정을 미리 대비할 수 있어서 장점이 있다. 1년 동안 충분한 관찰을 했기 때문에 언제 교미를 할 것이라는 사전 정보를 얻을 수 있었다. 그 다음에는 촬영하는 것일 뿐... 아니나 다를까 1월 교미철에는 교미 징조를 많이 보여주었다. ‘구구구’ 소리를 내려 서로 뽀뽀를 하기도 하고, 구애의 소리를 밤새냈다.
1월 어느 날 밤... 수컷이 육중한 몸으로 날아서 암컷 등에 올라타는 장면은 밤의 제국에서 보여주는 또 다른 묘미였다. 가장 어려울 것이라고 봤던 교미장면을 확보하자 한번 더 촬영하고 싶은 욕심도 생겼다. 그리고 그 기대도 어긋나지 않았다.
그런데 신기한 일은 자꾸만 벌어졌다. 암컷이 알을 품고 있는 기간에도 교미는 이루어졌다. 심지어 새끼가 알에서 깨어났는데도 수리부엉이 암수는 사랑을 나누었다. 일반적으로 동물들은 수정이 이루어지고 나면 교미를 하지 않는다. 그러면 수리부엉이는 왜 이시기까지 교미를 하는 것일까? 제작진이 관찰한 바에 의하면 새끼가 부화후 7~8주(둥지 떠나는 시기)가지 교미를 했다. 일반 상식을 깨는 수리부엉이의 수정 이외의 교미는 무슨 의미를 갖는 것일까?
국내의 내노라고 하는 조류학자들조차 이러한 사실조차 모르고 있었다. 외국의 자료를 어렵사리 찾아 연구한 결과 중요한 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 수리부엉이는 한번 부부의 연을 맺으면 평생 함께 지낸다. 수리부엉이가 번식을 전후해 약 5~6개월간 교미를 하는 것은 ‘부부관계(pair bond)’의 유지 강화를 도모하기 위해서다. 사냥을 위해 오랫동안 둥지를 비워야하는 수컷은 암컷이 바람을 피우는 것을 막아 자신의 유전자를 간직한 새끼를 잘 키워내도록 유도하고, 알을 품고 새끼를 키우는 암컷은 둥지의 새끼가 자신의 새끼이고 수컷이 먹이를 잘 사냥해오도록 유도하기 위해서 수정이외의 정기적인 교미를 하는 것이다. 이러한 암수의 필요에 의해 새끼는 키워지는 것이다. 수리부엉이의 번식전략인 것이다.
한번 짝을 맺으면 평생 함께 살아가는 수리부엉이는 이혼확률이 1%도 되지 않는다고 한다. 그것도 로드킬과 같은 사고나 질병으로 인해 다른 짝이 죽은 경우이고, 실제 이혼은 거의 없다고 한다. 평생 동안(야생에서의 수명은 24년까지 관찰됐으며 사육상태에서는 80년까지 산 것으로 기록돼 있다.) 서로를 신뢰하며 사는 것이다. 15%대에 이르는 우리나라의 이혼율을 생각한다면 서로 신뢰하며 사는 수리부엉이의 끈끈한 부부애는 시사하는 바가 아주 큰 것 같다.

I had the desire to take another shot when I secured the mating scene that I thought was the most difficult. And the expectation did not go against it.
But the miraculous thing has been going on. Mating was done during the period when the female was holding eggs. Even the cubs woke up from the eggs, and the owl and the owl shared love. Generally, animals do not mate after fertilization. So why does the owl mate until this time? The researchers observed that the pups mated for 7 to 8 weeks after the hatching (when they left their nests). What is the meaning of the mating other than the correction of the common owl that breaks the common sense?
Even the ornithologists, who are called domestic nurses, did not even know this fact. I found out the important facts as a result of studying foreign materials with difficulty. The eagle owls spend a lifetime together once they have a couple's kites. It is for the owl to mate for 5 to 6 months before and after breeding to maintain and strengthen the 'pair bond'. A male who has to leave his nest for a long time to hunt will prevent the female from chewing to induce him to nurture his own gene, and the female who holds the egg and raises the baby is the young of the nest is his cub, It is a regular mating other than crystal to induce you to hunt well. The need for these male and female pups is raised. It is the breeding strategy of the owl.
Once a pair is born, a life-long eagle owls a 1% chance of divorce. It is also the case that the other partner died because of an accident or illness like Rodriguez, and there is almost no actual divorce. For the rest of your life (life expectancy in the wild has been observed up to 24 years, and it has been recorded as 80 years in breeding). If we think about the divorce rate of our country which is about 15%, I think that the sticky wife of a horned owl who trusts each other seems to be very big.
