서해 최북단에 위치한 백령도는 인천아시아경기대회의 마스코트인 점박이물범의 서식지로 알려져 있다.
북위 45도 이북의 북극권에서만 서식하는 국제적 희귀종 물범은 얼음 위에서만 새끼를 낳는 해양 포유류이다.
그런데 특이하게 북위 38도 이남, 백령도 앞 바위섬에 물범들이 살고 있다.
우리나라 최초의 해양생물 관련 서적인 <자산어보> 제3권 바다짐승 편에는 옥복수라는 해양 포유류가 소개되어 있는데, 이 옥복수가 바로 점박이물범이다. 그때는 서해 전역이 물범의 집단 서식처였다고 전해지지만 현재 물범은 개체수가 급격히 줄어들어 멸종 위기에 처해 있다.
NLL을 지키는 해군함대 바로 앞, 평화롭게 바위 위에 모여 쉬고 있는 점박이물범들... 300여 마리의 백령도 점박이물범은 겨울이면 번식을 위해 중국의 산동반도로 이동해 봄이 되면 군사분계선을 넘어 백령도로 돌아온다.

Free Seal of Life Life Baekryeong NLL freely crossing seals
Baekryeong Island, located in the northernmost part of the west sea, is known as a habitat for spotted seals, the mascot of the Incheon Asian Games.
An international rarity seals that live only in the Arctic Circle north of 45 degrees north latitude are marine mammals that breed only on ice.
By the way, seals are living on the rocky island in front of Baekryeongdo, south of 38 degrees north latitude.
The first marine biology book in Korea, <An Assange Book> Volume 3 The marine mammal introduces a marine mammal, which is a spotted seaman. At that time, it was said that the whole of the west sea was a group habitat of seals, but the seals are now in extinction due to the sharply reduced population.
Just before the naval fleet to protect the NLL, the spotted seals resting peacefully on the rock ... 300 whale-head spotted seals move to the Shandong Peninsula in China for breeding in winter, and when spring arrives, they return to Baekryeong Island beyond the military demarcation line.
