러시아에서 한국의 유학생이 괴한의 칼을 맞고 중태에 빠졌다. 지난 2월, 역시 괴한의 습격을 받은 한인유학생은 결국 사망했다. 최근 러시아에서 갑작스레 줄을 잇는 한국인들에 대한 테러들. 러시아 경찰은 이것이 극우 민족주의자인 ‘스킨헤드’들의 소행이라 추정했다. 러시아의 유색인종들을 공포로 몰아넣은 이름, ‘러시아의 KKK’로 불리는 스킨헤드의 실체를 공개한다.
러시아의 청년들, 유색인종을 습격하다
러시아 수도 모스크바. 취재진은 현지교포로부터 최근 사건 피해자의 근황을 들을 수 있었다. “칼에 목 부분을 찔려 출혈이 심했지만, 다행히 지금은 거의 회복된 상태입니다”. 영화 ‘스크림’에 나오는 기괴한 마스크를 뒤집어썼던 범인은 아직 체포되지 않았다고 한다. “이제 민머리만 봐도 섬뜩합니다” “백주대낮에 그런 일이 생기다니, 너무 끔찍해요” 전부터 과격한 민족주의자들이 존재하는 건 알았지만 최근 때와 장소를 가리지 않는 공격이 잦아졌다고 입을 모은 현지 한인들. 놀랍게도, 이들 대다수가 한차례 이상의 충격적인 피해경험을 취재진에게 털어놓았다. “전철을 탔는데 주변에서 이상한 냄새가 나서 살펴봤더니 온몸에 소변같은 액체가 묻어 있었어요” “귀가하는 길에 갑자기 러시아 남자애들이 달려들어 마구 때렸어요. 낭떠러지로 굴러서 간신히 피했죠” 심지어 일부는 납치를 당할 뻔하기도 했다고. 한인들 뿐만 아니라, 슬라브계 백인이 아닌 유색인종들 모두가 같은 처지에 놓여있었다. 대체 왜 이런 무서운 일들이 러시아에서 벌어지고 있는 것일까. 진지하게 귀국을 고민하고 있다는 많은 교포들의 얼굴은, 두려움으로 가득했다.
흉폭해지는 스킨헤드의 범죄, 방관하는 정부
이러한 테러들의 배후에는 ‘스킨헤드(skin head; 머리를 짧게 밀어 붙여진 이름)’라 불리는 극우 민족주의자들이 있다. ‘네오나치’라고도 불리는 이들은 러시아 전역에만 벌써 그 수가 10만 명이 넘는다. 폭력과 전투를 수단으로 하는 단체인 만큼 격투기 선수들 중에도 조직원이 많은데, 세계 격투기 챔피언인 효도르의 동생도 현재 이 단체에 소속되어 있다. 그런데 주로 집단구타와 물건파손에 집중하던 이들의 횡포가 최근 흉기의 사용으로 그 피해가 더욱 심각해졌다. 2009년 한해에만 400명 가까운 사람들이 이들의 공격을 받았고, 그중 60명 이상이 사망한 것. 그러나 이런 중대범죄에 대한 정부의 대응은 이상하리만치 미약하다. 오히려 정부나 자본가들이 자신들의 권력유지를 위해 이들의 폭력성을 이용하는 것이 아니냐는 우려의 목소리가 나올 정도. 취재진은 과거 열성적인 스킨헤드 조직원이었던 어느 남학생을 통해 충격적인 말을 들었다. “돈 많은 사람들이 누구누구를 손봐주라면서 돈을 주고 우리를 고용했어요. 그런 ‘용역’생활이 싫어 단체를 그만두었죠”
길을 잃은 민족주의, 폭력으로 지킬 수 있을까
스킨헤드의 횡포가 심해지자 최근 러시아에서는 그에 반대하는 반(反)파시스트 단체, 일명 ‘안티 fa(cism)’들이 늘어나 더욱 문제가 커지고 있다. 안티파는 처음에 스킨헤드의 폭력과 민족배타성에 대항하여 평화적인 모습으로 등장했으나, 최근 5년간 10여 명의 우두머리가 피살당하는 등 점차 스킨헤드의 표적이 되자 방어를 위해 결국 무장투쟁을 시작한 것이다.
지금 러시아의 길거리는 유색인종에 대한 테러위험과 더불어 ‘민족주의를 둘러싼 자국청년들의 혈투’라는 이상한 아이러니에 휩싸여 있었다. 폭력이 또 다른 폭력을 낳고 복수가 더 큰 재앙을 부르는 악순환. 제2의 이념전쟁이 한 영토 안에서 벌어지는 러시아의 위태로운 오늘
