푸르른 신록의 계절이 왔다! 예로부터 왕에게 진상되었다고 하여 붙여진 이름 왕의 녹차. 섬진강에 인접한 하동은 다습하고 밤낮으로 기온차가 커 차나무 재배지로 최적의 환경을 가지고 있다. 거기에 오래 전부터 내려오는 ‘덖음’ 기술을 활용해 고급녹차만을 생산해내는데 우전과 세작, 중작, 대작 등 고급녹차 생산량이 전체의 95%이상이나 된다고.
명품녹차를 생산해 내는 하동의 녹차밭은 그 모습 또한 여느 녹차밭과 다르다.
인공적으로 만든 녹차밭이 아니라 지리산에서 자생적으로 자라난 차나무이기 때문. 하동에서 열리는 차 축제의 이름이 야생화 축제인 것도 바로 이 이유이다.
2010년기준으로 15회째를 맞이한 하동야생차축제에서 차잎 따기에서부터 덖기, 비비기 등 명품녹차 생산과정을 체험해보자.
더불어 명품 녹차도 마시고 녹차로 만든 다양한 요리까지 맛보다 보면 하루가 눈 깜짝할 사이에 지나갈 듯. 자생적으로 조성된 녹차밭 풍경은 덤으로 즐기는 보너스!
