남해바다는 멸치의 은빛으로 풍요롭다. 작고 흔한 물고기이기에 <자산어보>에서는 멸치를 가리켜 업신여길 멸(蔑)자를 써서 멸어(蔑魚)라 하였고, ‘물 밖으로 나오면 급한 성질 때문에 금방 죽는다’는 뜻으로 멸할 멸(滅)자의 멸어(滅魚)라고도 적었다.
하지만 멸치는 바다에서 결코 무시할 수 없는 존재.
2만여 종의 물고기가 사는 바다에서 가장 많은 개체 수를 차지하는 것이 바로 뼈대 있는 가문을 이룬 멸치들이다.
그러나 흔하다는 이유로 정작 제대로 조명되지 못 했던 은빛 찬란한 멸치 이야기.
갈치 등 포식자와 이루는 먹이사슬의 드라마와 하늘을 수놓는 철새들처럼 자유롭게 남해바다를 유영하는 멸치떼의 한밤 무도회, 그리고 물 밖 어부들의 삶을 지탱해준 자연의 선물로서 죽방렴의 싱싱한 이야기가 펼쳐진다.
