세태의 변화와 함께 이제 세계에서 거의 유일하게 남아있는 원시어업이자 전통어업 유산인 죽방렴이 삶의 땀내 풍기는 온전한 생업으로 5백 년 넘게 이어질 수 있었던 것은 무엇 때문일까?
죽방렴(竹防簾)은 대나무로 만든 어살의 일종으로 얕은 바다에 참나무 말뚝들을 울타리처럼 박고 대나무로 만든 발을 촘촘하게 그물처럼 엮어 세운 것이다.
물고기가 들어오는 길이 되는 V 모양의 발장 부분과 들어온 고기가 모이는 발통 부분으로 이루어져 있다.
밀물 때 들어온 물고기들이 썰물 때에 빠져나가지 못하고 갇히도록 고안된 것이다. 이런 죽방렴은 원시시대부터 존재했던 어업 형태로, 지금은 남해 지족해협 일대의 사례가 세계에서 거의 유일하게 남아있어 어업 유산으로서의 보전 가치 또한 높다.
한편, 남해 지역의 죽방렴에 대한 문헌 기록은 예종 원년(1496년)에 편찬된 <경상도 속찬지리지 남해현조>에 처음 등장해 적어도 5백 년이 넘는 역사를 가지고 있음이 확인되었다.
또한 조선 후기 김려의 <우해이어보>(1803)에는 죽방렴을 만들고 고기를 잡는 방식이 구체적으로 묘사돼 있는데, 지족해협 일대는 얕은 수심과 빠른 물살, 조수간만의 큰 차이로 인해 죽방렴을 위한 최적의 조건이 갖춰진 곳이다.
