해마다 12월이 되면 대관령 곳곳에 황태를 만들기 위한 덕장이 설치된다.
춥고 일교차가 큰 대관령의 기후를 이용하여 지역민들이 만든 특산물이 바로 황태이다.
황태는 매서운 겨울철 눈보라와 청정한 봄바람 속에서 말리는 명태로, 겨울 추위에 얼었다 녹기를 반복하면서 황태의 속살은 먹기 좋게 풀어 헤쳐져 노란빛을 낸다.
낮에는 겉만 녹았다가 밤이면 꽁꽁 얼기를 약 20회 이상 반복해야 질 좋은 황태가 되므로 밤 평균 기온이 두 달 이상 영하 10도 이하로 내려가는 대관령은 육질과 식감이 우수한 황태를 만드는 천혜의 조건을 갖고 있다.
수십만 마리의 황태가 널려있는 덕장은 겨울 야생동물에게도 뿌리칠 수 없는 유혹이다.
황태를 먹기 위해 밤마다 덕장 주변을 배회하는 너구리와 삵을 밀착 촬영한 생생한 현장과 겨울 추위와 봄바람 곁에서 황태를 널고 말리는 대관령 사람들을 만난다.
