빌레못은 평평한 용암대지 위에 생긴 연못을 뜻하는 제주 고유어다. 거문오름 선흘곶과 벵뒤굴 주변에는 빌레못이 잘 발달돼 있다.
물이 귀한 제주에서 빌레못은 뭇생명의 요람이 된다. 어리연꽃과 순채가 용암대지에 뿌리를 박고 꽃을 피워내며 그 연잎 위에서 물장군, 물자라, 늑대거미는 새끼를 키운다.
빌레못은 말과 말테우리가 목을 축이는 오아시스다. 그리고 그 빌레못 지하 동굴에는 박쥐가 새끼를 품고 젖을 먹이며 비행하고, 농발거미는 한 달 넘게 식음을 전폐한 채 동굴 천정에 매달려 알집을 지킨다.
빌레못 지상과 지하를 교차하는 생명의 향연, 검고 굳은 용암대지 위에는 그동안 우리가 보지 못했던 뜨거운 모정이 흐르고 있다.
