곶자왈은 점성이 높은 용암이 작은 바위 덩어리로 쪼개져 요철 지형을 만들고, 그 위에 나무와 덩굴식물이 뒤엉켜 자라는 숲을 뜻한다. 거문오름 용암의 길을 따라가면 원시림을 떠올리게 하는 곶자왈의 장관이 펼쳐진다.
뿌리로 거대한 바위를 움켜쥐고 수백 년을 살아온 고목들의 행렬.. 그리고 그 그늘 아래엔 양치식물과 버섯 등이 무성하게 자라 초록덮개(Green Mantle)를 이룬다.
곶자왈의 식생이 풍부하고 독특한 것은 돌무더기 아래 지하에서 뿜어내는 습기 때문이다.
벵뒤굴 주변 동굴 천정에는 많은 잔뿌리들이 내려와 있다. 한 방울의 물과 습기를 머금기 위해 오랜 세월 용암의 절리를 타고 지하 동굴로 들어가 숨을 쉬고 있는 것이다.
끈질긴 생명력을 지닌 뿌리의 주인은 누구일까? 지상에는 종가시나무, 천선과 등이 살아 있고, 그 나무의 품에 의지해 긴꼬리딱새, 사슴벌레, 달팽이 등이 번식한다.
생명의 숲 곶자왈은 지하세계가 만들어낸 초록 덮개다.

Gotjawal means forest where high-viscosity lava is split into small rock masses to form irregular terrain, and trees and vines grow on top of it. Going down along the path of lava flows, you will see the spectacle of Gotjawal, reminiscent of the primeval forest.
It is a procession of old people who have grabbed huge rocks with their roots and lived for hundreds of years. Under the shade, ferns and mushrooms grow green and form a green mantle.
The rich and distinctive vegetation of Gotjawal is due to the moisture that bubbles from underground beneath the piles.
There are many fine roots down the cave ceiling near Beng Du Gul. In order to have a drop of water and moisture, it has been taking a long time to go into the underground cavern by breathing the lava joint.
Who is the owner of the root with persistent vitality? On the ground are dead trees, celestial trees, etc. are alive, and depending on the bark of that tree, long-tailed scallops, stag beetles, and snails breed.
The Forest of Life Gotjawal is a green cover made by the underworld.
