경남 함양군 마천면에 위치한 창원마을. 지리산 자락에 위치한 이 마을엔 산비탈의 자갈을 골라내고 물을 가둬 층층이 만든 다랑논이 있다.
다랑논을 중심으로 아래쪽 마을엔 사람들이, 위쪽 산에는 야생동물들이 살고 있다. 봄이 돼 언 땅이 녹으면 두꺼비, 북방산개구리, 도롱뇽 등 양서류와 올빼미, 딱새, 때까치 등 새들이 번식을 위해 다랑논 근처로 모여든다.
당산나무 구멍에 자리를 잡은 올빼미와 농부의 움막 처마에 둥지를 튼 딱새 부부. 농부가 녹은 땅을 갈아엎고 물을 대면 떠오르는 곤충들은 이들의 먹잇감이다.
산 속에 사람이 만든 습지, 다랑논을 중심으로 산의 위아래 생명들은 공존, 공생한다.
