사형수 청년 대한민국 초대 대통령이 되다.
1898년 11월 독립협회 간부들이 경무청에 체포되는 사건이 벌어진다. 이승만은 만민공동회를 열어 이 사건을 규탄하다가 투 옥되어 사형을 선고 받는다. 옥중에서도 이승만은 학교를 여는 등 자신 의 큰 꿈을 포기 하지 않는다. 갇혀 있는 가 운데 독립운동에 뜻을 두고 있는 이상재 신 흥우 박용만 같은 동지들을 만난다. 1904년 석방되자, 이승만은 미국으로 가는 배에 오 른다.
이즈모호 사건, 그 가운데 선 이승만!
독립운동가 박용만. 그는 이승만의 옥중동지였다. 하와이에 온 박용만은, 국민군단을 세워 무력으로 국권을 되찾고자 한다.
1918년. 박용만의 국민군단이 호놀룰루 항에 정박한 일본군함 이즈모호를 폭파시키려 한다는 제보가 입수된다. 관계자들은 체포되고, 박용만은 법정에 서게 된다. 이후, 국민군단은 해체되고, 이승만은 하와이의 독립운동 세력 전체를 장악한다. 하와이 독립운동 세력의 판도를 바꾸어 놓은 이즈모호 사건. 과연 그 진실은 무엇일까?
워싱턴에서 전하는 이승만의 음성 식민지 조선의 신화가 되다!
1942년. 미국과 일본의 전쟁이 시작 되는 가운데, 이승만의 목소리가 단파 라디오를 통해 조선에 전해진다.
“나 이승만이 지금 말하는 것은 우리 이천삼백만의 생명의 소식이오, 자유의 소식입니다. 저 포학무도한 왜적의 철망 속에서 호흡을 자유로 못하는 우리 민족에게 이 자유의 소식을 일일이 전하시오.”
일제는 이승만의 목소리를 들은 수신자들 검거. 경성 방송국 관계자를 포함한 300여명이 투옥시킨다. 그러나 이 단파방송 사건은 지식층 사이에 이승만의 이름을 신화로 남겨 놓는다.
