우리나라 사람이라면 누구나 어릴 때부터 가져 왔던 막연한 두려움이 있다. 그 하나는 한반도 야생의 지존 ‘호랑이’이고 다른 하나는 밤의제왕 ‘수리부엉이’이다.
호랑이는 이미 한반도 야생에서 사라져버리고 시베리아에 가야 그 모습을 볼 수 있다. 일제시대에 해수구제라는 명목으로 마구잡이로 포획한 결과다. 반면 어린 아이도 낚아채간다는 수리부엉이는 한때 우리 곁에서 자취를 감추다시피 했다. 6,70년대 전국적으로 쥐잡기를 한답시고 대량으로 그리고 동시적으로 쥐약을 살포했기 때문이다. 비틀거리는 쥐는 여우와 삵은 물론이고 수리부엉이의 표적이 되었던 것이다. 수리부엉이는 2차 중독으로 인해 소리 한번 질러보지 못하고 개체수가 급감하고 말았다.
야생을 호령하던 호랑이와 수리부엉이... 호랑이는 인간의 탐욕에 굴복하고 말았지만, 수리부엉이는 소리 소문없이 야밤 도주해 은밀한 숲속 절벽에 ‘수리부엉이 망명정부’를 구성하고 살아남기 위해 몸부림쳤다.
그러길 약 30여년... 수리부엉이는 밤의 제국을 복원할 만큼 강성해졌고, 독립국가를 선포하기에 이르렀다.
세상의 모든 야생의 밤을 호령하는 위대한 밤의 제국... 이제 우리는 수리부엉이가 밤의 제왕으로 다시 등극하는 날을 축복하며, 수리부엉이가 진정한 밤의 제왕으로 등극했음을 자연의 이름으로 선포한다.
그리고 이제 감춰진 사냥, 사랑, 번식 등 수리부엉이 제국의 비밀을 하나둘 세상에 공개하고자 한다. 아무도 모르고 있었던 수리부엉이만의 과학적인 생존비법에 감탄을 금치 못할 것이다. ‘자연다큐멘터리-밤의 제왕 수리부엉이’는 인간의 무지에 대한 자기반성이며 다시는 그 어떤 생명도 멸종의 구렁텅이로 내몰지 말아야한다는 다짐이기도 하다.
