동강은 바닥에서 지하수가 샘솟아 강물을 맑고 차게 만든다.
깨끗한 물에서만 살아가는 어름치(천연기념물 제259호)는 산란기에 돌탑을 쌓는다.
돌을 쌓고, 산란하기를 반복한 끝에 알을 잃어버리지 않도록 5~8cm의 탑을 쌓는 것에 모든 에너지를 쏟아 부은 어미 어름치는 동강에 스스로 몸을 내어놓는다.
동강을 따라 병풍처럼 둘러선 석회암 절벽에 난 구멍은 생명들의 보금자리가 된다.
비오리도 산란 때가 되면 석회암 굴에 찾아들어 알을 낳는다.
크고 작은 생명들이 모여 풍요로운 강을 만드는 동강. 120리를 흐르는 동강이 빚어낸 수많은 생명의 소리를 듣는다.
